Halo 4: Castle Map Pack Review: Getcha Motor Runnin’

halo4-header

What better way to mark the last Halo 4 map pack than to go big? The Castle Map Pack does just that by providing big maps filled with a big selection of those oh so sweet vehicles that are not only deadly fun to use, but even more fun to blow the heck up. Whereas the previous DLC, Majestic Map Pack, featured small maps for intense close quarters fighting, Castle marks the return of large maps and epic vehicle battles. If you like your fights big and your vehicles plenty, then this map pack is for you. (more…)

Gears of War: Judgment Review: The Verdict is Fun

gearsofwarjudgment-header

Gamers can be fickle and are often quick to judge a game by its cover, so let’s get this out of the way. Yes, Gears of War: Judgment is Microsoft and Epic’s way of squeezing in one more iteration of the phenomenally successful franchise before the next generation Xbox is released. Yes, it does have an “expansion pack” feel to it at times. But most importantly, yes, it’s damn fun – in fact, it’s probably the most fun of the series. (more…)

bioshockinfinitelogo

BioShock Infinite is the third installment in the Irrational Games series which started underwater in the city of Rapture and is now high in the clouds in Columbia. After several delays and a plethora of gameplay videos, the game was finally released on March 26. The mysterious story and characters had been paraded before the public, and fans and newcomers alike were ready to take on the city in the sky. There was a lot of pressure on Ken Levine and his team – would they be able to make a game that could live up to the BioShock name? (more…)

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate Review: Whip It Good

Reboots are all the rage these days. Major titles such as Tomb Raider, Mortal Kombat and Devil May Cry went back to the drawing board and returned with a fresh coat of paint and new stories to tell. Reviews, and for that matter, sales, have also shown us that rebooting a franchise normally yields positive results. One of the earliest reboots this generation, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow wiped the slate clean and gave us an entirely new take on the revered franchise. Lords of Shadow was very well received, and was popular enough to spawn a sequel. Release information for Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 has yet to see the light of day (It’s a vampire game, get it?), but until that day comes, we have Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate. Dollar Dash Review: No Honor Among Thieves

dollardash-header

Candygun’s Dollar Dash owes a massive debt to the long-running Bomberman series. Instead of cartoony robots blowing each other to bits with comically large bombs, it features cartoony robbers blowing each other to bits with comical weapons to obtain large stacks of cash. This wholesale borrowing of Bomberman’s main theme isn’t highway robbery, but don’t expect Dollar Dash to make you an offer you can’t refuse. (more…)

Retro City Rampage Review: Nostalgia Gone Wild

retrocityrampge-header

“What would Grand Theft Auto have been like on the NES?” It’s an interesting question, and one that Vblank’s Retro City Rampage attempts to answer by fusing the franchise’s original bird’s-eye viewpoint with a bucketful of 80s/90s nostalgia. The game never quite comes together, but designer Brian Provinciano definitely deserves points for trying. (more…)

Halo 4: Majestic Map Pack Review: Close-Quarters Fun

halo4-header

The Halo 4 Majestic Map Pack marks the second batch of downloadable multiplayer maps, and it is clear that 343 Industries went with the “less is more” approach – believing less space leads to more intense, frenetic action. And wow, did it work like a charm. (more…)

Writer Rumble Review: Let’s Get Ready to… Actually, No

writerrumble-header

Writer Rumble is the first game that GameFly, the video game version of Netflix, has produced. The premise of the game is very simple: choose a character and get ready to play Boggle (or Scramble With Friends) as a variety of monsters make their approach. Sticks and stones won’t break their bones, but words do have the power to destroy them. As you quickly search for words in the board area, keep an eye up top as well where the “action” is taking place, and make sure you’re keeping pace with all the ghouls headed your way. (more…)
