Dragon Quest Builders Hands-On Preview: Raising the Roof

dragonquestbuilders-header

Last week, Square Enix released a demo of Dragon Quest Builders ahead of its October 11th launch. I haven’t played a Dragon Quest game since Dragon Warrior hit the NES, and that one ended in horrible tragedy. I never had any prior interest in Dragon Quest Builders; my only knowledge being that it incorporated elements of mega-hit Minecraft. I was a fan of Minecraft, so I decided to give it a shot. I mean, that’s the point of a demo, right? (more…)

“What is Dragon Quest Builders?” Square Enix answers that question in a new trailer

if you’re unfamiliar with Dragon Quest Builders, Square Enix’s upcoming “open-world sandbox RPG,” then the game’s newest trailer was made just for you. The publisher covers a lot of ground over the course of four and a half minutes, ultimately delving into its story (which runs parallel to the original Dragon Quest), the realm of Alefgard, the monsters that are threatening it, and most importantly, how to build things…

Rise as a legendary builder in a tale of epic proportions and explore a vast sandbox world to gather materials, craft items, and build everything imaginable. It’s up to you to use the power of creation in battle against the reigning Dragonlord and his evil minions to restore peace to the shattered realm. Build for fun. Build for adventure. Build to save the world!

Dragon Quest Builders will be released for the PS4 and Vita on October 11.

Square Enix loves PAX West and the Japanese megapublisher will once again have a major presence at the Seattle-based convention.

The publisher’s booth will include a dozen demos, including some of this Fall’s biggest releases (Dragon Quest Builders, Final Fantasy XV, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8: Final Chapter Prologue, Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration, and World of Final Fantasy). Square Enix also plans to demo 2017’s biggest re-release, Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age.

But if you want to get up close and personal with your favorite developers, a series of panels from the publisher will give you your chance. Friday will focus on Deus Ex Go and Final Fantasy XV, while Saturday’s presentations will dive deep into Final Fantasy XV, World of Final Fantasy, and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided.

Square Enix is considering a Nintendo NX port of Dragon Quest Builders

dragonquestbuilders-header

Square Enix will release Dragon Quest Builders for the PS4 and Vita on October 10, and fans seem very excited about this latest spinoff from the megapopular RPG franchise.

In addition to its Minecraft-like presentation, the game also goes back to the franchise’s roots and tells a story directly connected to the destruction of Alfegard during the original Dragon Quest, which was released for the NES all the way back in 1989. And possibly because of that connection, there’s a real chance that Dragon Quest Builders might make its way back onto a Nintendo console next year.

Speaking to DualShockers at this year’s Gamescom event, Series Producer Noriyoshi Fujimoto said that Square Enix is considering a Nintendo NX port of Dragon Quest Builders. While it’s far from a sure thing, Fujimoto added that the “family-oriented” nature of Dragon Quest Builders would make it a great fit for the console.

The Nintendo NX will be released in March 2017… though we still know very little about Nintendo’s next console.

Square Enix will bring a climbing wall, go-kart course, and 7 playable games to Comic-Con

squareenix-logo

Square Enix doesn’t just want to play their games at next week’s San Diego Comic-Con, they want you to experience them as well. Taking over a section of San Diego at 7th Avenue and Market Street (in the city’s Gaslamp District), the publisher will host a special Square Enix Experience on July 22 and July 23 from noon until 10:00 PM (Pacific Time).

Fans who queue up to try their hand at the physical challenges will be greeted by a rock climbing wall from Rise of the Tomb Raider, a go-kart track from Final Fantasy XV, and a bungee run from Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided – The Icarus Dash
Enter the dark world of Deus Ex Mankind Divided and become covert agent Adam Jensen without the trench coat and fashionable shades. Showing off the Icarus Dash move, participants will have to run as fast as they can with a bungee cord on their back while shooting a laser gun at targets.

Final Fantasy XV – The Royal Race
Fans can race each other in this themed, go-kart race that takes them through the various landscapes of Final Fantasy XV. Visitors can also have a photo taken to commemorate their race.

Rise of the Tomb Raider – Glacier Climb
The Rise of the Tomb Raider Glacier Climb, inspired by the opening sequence of the game, will allow fans to test their skill and will against the hostile environments Lara faces. The 30-foot glacier wall covered in snow, offers an incredible opportunity for fans to experience Lara’s world. Climbers can have their photo taken while on the wall to capture their adventure. This obstacle challenge is the latest event in the Tomb Raider 20 Year Celebration (#TombRaider20), a year-long salute to the iconic heroine.

But don’t worry, the Square Enix Experience will also have plenty of games to play. Players can relax with a beer (if they’re over 21) and play several upcoming Square Enix titles including Deux Ex: Mankind Divided, Dragon Quest Builders, Final Fantasy XV, I Am Setsuna, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and World of Final Fantasy. Demo kiosks for all of these games will also be available at Square Enix’s booth (#3829) on the Comic-Con show floor.

Square Enix will also host a number of panels during the convention, and you can find a complete catalog of the publisher’s presentations after the break. (more…)

Minecraft-like Dragon Quest Builders will be released in North America this October

As part of Dragon Quest’s 30th anniversary celebration, Square Enix has announced that Dragon Quest Builders will be released in North America this Fall. Starring a mysterious character known only as the Legendary Builder, players will set out to rebuild the kingdom of Alefgard after a cataclysmic attack by the Dragonlord:

A long time ago, the realm of Alefgard was engulfed in an ongoing battle between the humans and the monsters. A celebrated hero stood up and confronted the Dragonlord, the wicked king of the monsters, to try to put an end to the conflict. Through his vile trickery, the Dragonlord deceived the hero into a false deal, and Alefgard was destroyed in the process. The few survivors were robbed of the power to build and scattered around the world to live out their lives in despair and apathy. The very idea of creativity and imagination became mere legend, and mankind was reduced to a meager existence, surviving only by scavenging what remained among the ruins for centuries to come.

Until one day, a new hero is awoken by the spirit of the land – one who will become the Legendary Builder, within whose fingertips dwells the long-lost power of creation. Rebuild the ruined realm in your own image and bring an end to the Dragonlord’s reign of evil once and for all.

The Minecraft-like game is certainly getting into the anniversary spirit, as it seems to take place during the aftermath of the “bad ending” from the first Dragon Quest game. And in a way, Dragon Quest Builders might be the closest thing we’ll ever get to a sequel to the NES classic.

In development for the PS4 and Vita, Dragon Quest Builders will be released this October.
