Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII E3 2013 gameplay trailer released

In case you didn’t get enough of Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII with its first E3 2013 trailer, Square Enix has released another one focusing on gameplay. This time, Lightning chases Snow through Yusnaan and does battle with a variety of monsters in that flashy, sparkly way that the Final Fantasy series is known for.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII will be released for the PS3 and Xbox 360 on February 14, 2014.

Square Enix to unveil “next-generation of Final Fantasy” at E3 2013

Square Enix is bringing the Final Fantasy franchise to this year’s E3 Expo in a big way. The publisher plans to have not just one or two, but four Final Fantasy games on display at the show. In addition to the three previously announced games (Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, and Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster), Square Enix will unveil a first look at “the next-generation” of the franchise. Square Enix executives have previously hinted that this new game may be connected to Agni’s Philosophy, the technical demo they presented at last year’s E3 Expo.

In addition to a quartet of Final Fantasy titles, Square Enix will also show off a few of their co-productions with western developers including Murdered: Soul Suspect, Thief, Deus Ex: Human Revolution – Director’s Cut, and Deus Ex: The Fall. Rounding out Square Enix’s E3 offerings is Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMix, a PS3 exclusive set to release this September.

Square Enix will release Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII in February 2014

Square Enix has released an E3 2013 trailer for Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII and you can check it out above. In addition to showing Lightning at her Matrix-y most (and re-introducing us to Snow), the trailer also pins a North American release date on the PS3 and Xbox 360 game for the first time: February 11, 2014.

European gamers will get it three days later on February 14.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII announced for PS3 and Xbox 360

As expected, Square Enix announced a third game in the “Lightning saga” during today’s start of the Final Fantasy 25th Anniversary celebration. The game will be known as Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, and it’ll explore the final 13 days of Lightning’s world.

Yoshinori Kitase, a Producer on the Fabula Nova Crystallis project, promises that the game will include “the answers to the Lightning saga” and we were given our first taste of those answers through a series of presentations by the game’s developers.

The game will be an open world RPG that makes use of the Paradigm Shift combat system. Players will also be able to customize Lightning’s armor and weapons as they attempt to save the world from its apocalyptic demise. You can more about the game directly from the developers themselves as Director Motomu Toriyama, Game Design Director Yuji Abe, and Art Director Isamu Kamikokuryo all gave lenghty presentations on stage in Japan.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII will be released for the PS3 and Xbox 360 sometime next year.

Square Enix is probably going to announce Final Fantasy XIII-3 on September 1

Square Enix will be celebrating the Final Fantasy franchise’s silver anniversary during a special Final Fantasy 25th Anniversary event in Japan next month. In addition to the typical celebration stuff, the publisher plans to reveal new details about the future of the Final Fantasy XIII series.

Scheduled for September 1 at 11:30 AM (Japan Standard Time), the announcement will come as part of a panel titled “Final Fantasy XIII Lightning Saga: New Developments Presentation” and will likely feature a Final Fantasy XIII-3 announcement.

A third Final Fantasy XIII game is the most likely outcome for this presentation as Square Enix previously announced the end of Final Fantasy XIII-2 downloadable content with the “Requiem of the Goddess” pack. Adding more fuel to the FFXIII-3 fire is the suspected cancellation of Final Fantasy Versus XIII. Final Fantasy XIII-3 is basically the only FFX13-related announcement Square Enix could be making.
