The Walking Dead: The Final Season will likely never be completed as Telltale Games institutes a “majority studio closure”

A series of social media posts from recently laid-off developers lead many to believe that Telltale Games was shutting down yesterday morning, but the lights will remain on for now according to an official statement from the company’s executives.

Writing on Twitter, Telltale CEO Pete Hawley confirmed that a majority of the company’s employees would be let go:

“It’s been an incredibly difficult year for Telltale as we worked to set the company on a new course. Unfortunately, we ran out of time trying to get there. We released some of our best content this year and received a tremendous amount of positive feedback, but ultimately, that did not translate to sales. With a heavy heart, we watch our friends leave today to spread our brand of storytelling across the games industry.”

Hawley would go on to say that “further comments regarding [Telltale’s] product portfolio [will be announced] in the coming weeks,” but sources within the company told USgamer that the majority of their in-development projects have been canceled.

The Walking Dead: The Final Season‘s second episode, Suffer the Children, will launch next week as originally planned, but the remaining two episodes will likely go unfinished, marking an abrupt end for the season and the franchise. A further list of cancellations includes Game of Thrones Season 2, The Wolf Among Us Season 2, and the recently-announced Stranger Things game.

The 25 employees still under Telltale’s employ will stay on to complete the Netflix-powered port of Minecraft: Story Mode, but it is currently unknown what will happen to them after that.

It’s our hope that all of Telltale’s former employees will be able to quickly find better employment opportunities in the future.

Telltale is working with Netflix to create a Stranger Things game; Minecraft: Story Mode “interactive adventure” coming to Netflix app

You might say I’m upside down with excitement, but Telltale Games has announced they’re working with Netflix to create a Stranger Things game adaptation for PC and consoles.

The announcement was made yesterday in a pair of tweets (1, 2) on the developer’s official account. No other details were revealed, but it will presumably follow the episodic structure of Telltale’s recent releases:

[W]e’re thrilled to confirm that Telltale is developing a game based on Stranger Things that we’ll publish to consoles and computers at a later date.

Our partnership with Netflix is something we’re incredibly proud of, and while we don’t have anything more to share right now, we’re excited to reveal details on these projects later in the year.

In a separate tweet, Telltale also confirmed that they’re converting Minecraft: Story Mode into an “interactive adventure” that will be playable through Netflix’s streaming service. It should be available sometime this Fall.

New Retail Releases: Madden NFL 18, Uncharted The Lost Legacy, F1 2017, More

Are you ready for some football? EA Sports is getting ready to hike Madden NFL 18 into stores this week for the PS4 and Xbox One. The latest football sim from EA Tiburon makes use of the Frostbite Engine for the first time, as well as a Story Mode known as “Longshot.” And if you’re looking to pick up an Xbox One this week, Microsoft is now offering an Xbox One S 500GB + Madden NFL 18 Bundle.

Also available this week is a new Uncharted adventure from Naughty Dog. Nathan Drake hung up his spurs at the end of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, but Chloe Frazer and Nadine Ross will carry on this week in Uncharted: The Lost Legacy for the PS4.

In typical Uncharted fashion, Chloe and Nadine are in a race against the bad guys in The Lost Legacy, but players interested in a different kind of race will be able to pick up F1 2017 for the PS4 and Xbox One. Codemasters has added a revamped Career Mode to F1 2017, as well as other improvements both online and off.

Career criminals might be interested in The Escapists 2, which will be available this week for the PS4 and Xbox One from Team17. New prisons, a new combat system, and a range of character customization options have moved The Escapists 2 to an even bigger house (pun so intended).

Finally this week, a trio of re-releases will bring some old favorites to new places. Telltale will launch Minecraft: Story Mode – The Complete Adventure on the Switch. Koei Tecmo will compile together the four Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm games in Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Legacy for the PS4 and Xbox One. And Bethesda will bundle together Wolfenstein: The New Order + Wolfenstein: The Old Blood in a single package on the PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

That’s all for now, but we’re definitely going to learn more about the Fall’s biggest upcoming releases during the 2017 Gamescom expo this week.

Minecraft: Story Mode Season 2 Episode 2 will be available on August 15; Season 1 comes to Switch on August 22

Telltale Games has announced that Minecraft: Story Mode Season 2‘s second episode, Giant Consequences, will be released for the PC, PS4, Xbox One, and mobile devices on August 15. This time, Jesse and friends are bound for a new adventure in the “icy unknown”:

There may be more to this fearsome foe than meets the eye, but to find out, Jesse — together with a few trusty friends — must embark on another adventure, this time into the icy unknown…

Fans of Nintendo’s newest console will also be happy to learn that the Complete Adventure collection for the original Minecraft: Story Mode will be released for the Switch on August 22. The eight-episode series will be available in stores as a retail release and as a digital download through the Nintendo eShop.

New Retail Releases: Titanfall 2, World of Final Fantasy, Skyrim Special Edition, More

newreleases102316

EA and Respawn Entertainment will storm their way into stores this week with Titanfall 2 for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One. In addition to expanded multiplayer options, Titanfall 2 will include a single-player campaign for the first time. We can finally say it… Your Titanfall sequel is ready.

Also available this week is World of Final Fantasy, a new “chibi” RPG from Square Enix that celebrates the grand history of the Final Fantasy franchise. Designed primarily for a younger audience, PS4 and Vita players will still need to save the world from an evil mastermind. Thankfully, they’ll be aided by dozens of heroes from previous games in the series.

If you’d rather skip all the fighting and just dance, Ubisoft has you covered with the launch of Just Dance 2017 on the PC, PS3, PS4, Wii, Wii U, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. Just Dance 2017 includes dozens of songs, and the new Just Dance Machine mode, which will throw an assortment of different dance styles at players.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – Special Edition will make its PC, PS4, and Xbox One debut this week, as Bethesda plans to relaunch their epic RPG on a new generation of platforms. And Telltale will bring together Minecraft: Story Mode – The Complete Adventure on a single disc for the PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.

Finally this week, one of my favorite puzzlers of the year, Tumblestone, will receive a retail release on the PS4 and Wii U.

A complete list of this week’s new retail releases can be found after the break. (more…)

Telltale will release The Complete Adventure for Minecraft: Story Mode at retailers on October 25

minecraftstorymode-header

Telltale Games has announced that they’re bundling together all eight episodes for Minecraft: Story Mode in The Complete Adventure, which will be available on retail store shelves for the PC, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One on October 25. The collection is also in the works for the PS3, and will be released at a later date.

In Minecraft: Story Mode, playing as either a male or female hero named “Jesse,” you’ll embark on a perilous adventure across the Overworld, through the Nether, to the End, and beyond. You and your friends revere the legendary Order of the Stone: Warrior, Redstone Engineer, Griefer, and Architect; slayers of the Ender Dragon. While at EnderCon in hopes of meeting Gabriel the Warrior, Jesse’s friends discover that something is wrong… something dreadful. Terror is unleashed, and you must set out on a quest to find The Order of the Stone if you are to save your world from oblivion.

The story continues beyond the original season with three “Adventure Pass” episodes, chronicling the further journeys of Jesse and friends lost in a hall of portals leading from one world to the next. Will you be able to find your way home?

Minecraft: Story Mode – The Complete Adventure will be priced at $29.99 on all platforms.

Xbox Store Today: ReCore, Pac-Man Championship Edition 2, The Witness, more

recore-header

It’s a big day for the Xbox Games Store, as Xbox One owners will be able to choose from more than a dozen new releases this week, as well as the launch of Microsoft’s Xbox Play Anywhere program.

ReCore is a third-person action game for the Xbox One from Armature Studio and Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune. Players will take control of Joule Adams, one of the last remaining humans on Far Eden. As she struggles for survival, she’ll have to fight back against evil robotic foes and create her own army of friendly automatons. As the first Xbox Play Anywhere title, players who purchase it for the Xbox One will also receive access to the game on Windows 10 as well.

Most of this week’s new releases deal with “Survival” in some way or another, but The Witness is in a class of its own. Players wake up on “a strange island full of puzzles” and must work out the solutions if they want to continue in the Xbox One title. A simpler survival story can be found in Pac-Man Championship Edition 2, an Xbox One game that pits the famous Pac-Man against the Ghosts once again.

Frank West’s fight isn’t with any kind of spook or specter, but the living dead. And he’ll need all the help he can get as Capcom will re-release Dead Rising, Dead Rising 2, and Dead Rising 2: Off the Record on the Xbox One this week. The remastered games will feature improved graphics, and you can even grab all three of them at a discount with the Dead Rising Triple Pack.

2K Games and Irrational Games will also re-release a loosely connected trilogy for the Xbox One this week with the launch of BioShock: The Collection. Containing BioShock, BioShock 2, and BioShock Infinite, Xbox One owners will be able to play through visually-enhanced version of the games and listen to developer’s commentary from Ken Levine and others.

And are you ready for some sports? New hockey (NHL 17), racing (NASCAR Heat: Evolution), and soccer games (Pro Evolution Soccer 2017) are available to download for the Xbox One today. Pro Evolution Soccer 2017 was also released for the Xbox 360.

Finally this week, Telltale Games will launch new entries in two of their episodic series. Xbox 360 owners will be able to play as both Batman and Bruce Wayne in Batman: The Telltale Series – Episode 1: Realm of Shadows, while Xbox One and Xbox 360 owners will be able to experience the finale of Minecraft: Story Mode in Episode 8: A Journey’s End?

More information about all of these games (and a few other new releases) can be found after the break. (more…)
