All Articles: Until Dawn

Watch Until Dawn’s full PlayStation Experience demo right here

Supermassive Games’ Until Dawn was playable at the PlayStation Experience that Sony recently held in Las Vegas. And if you weren’t able to attend, here’s an eight-minute video presentation of the full demo that the developer brought to the show. You can see as Sam (Hayden Panettiere) gets interrupted while taking a bath, and then has to run through a creepy house with no lights on while wearing nothing but a towel. I cannot believe that towel did not fall off. Those physics are off the charts.

Until Dawn is scheduled to be released in 2015 for the PlayStation 4.

Two new trailers show off Supermassive’s slasher simulator Until Dawn

Friday the 13th (with Purple Tracksuit Jason!) was released for the NES in 1989 and it was one of the last video games to dabble in the slasher subgenre. Thankfully, the maniacs are back as no less than three slasher simulators are slowly working their way towards consoles and PCs. Sony is doing their part by teaming up with Supermassive Games to release Until Dawn for the PS4 in 2015.

Until Dawn stars Hayden Panettiere as Samantha and you can watch her look scared in a new trailer for the game released during today’s opening act of the PlayStation Experience. And if you’re in a particularly sadistic mood, you can watch her be menaced by a deranged clown in the brand new Game Awards 2014 “World Premiere” trailer after the break.

Between her bloody end in Scream 4 and all the times Sylar went after her on Heroes, Panettiere likely feels right at home in both trailers. (more…)

80s horror homage Until Dawn moves to PS4 without Move controller requirement

When we last saw Until Dawn, it was a first-person horror game on the PS3 that required players to use the PlayStation Move controller as they attempted to survive the night while being stalked by a homicidal maniac. Sony reintroduced gamers to Until Dawn during their Gamescom presentation and it looks like it’s undergone a few changes. For starters, it’s now in development only for the PS4 as a third-person game. However, the biggest change is that developer Supermassive has added DualShock 4 support to the game, making the Move controller no longer required.

But don’t worry, Until Dawn is still be an homage to 80s slasher flicks as the plot still asks eight friends to battle a homicidal maniac in the woods.

To capture that authentic Hollywood feel, Supermassive has signed several well-known genre actors to run from their maniac including Rami Malek (Ahkmenrah from the Night at the Museum movies), Brett Dalton (Agent Ward from Agents of SHIELD), and Heroes‘ Hayden Panettiere. At the very least, we know that Panettiere has experience fleeing from a homicidal maniac.

Until Dawn likely won’t be released in 2014, but Supermassive has promised more information on their launch plans “in the coming months.”

Final Gamescom 2014 teaser from Sony promises to “Reinvent Horror” on PS4

Sony’s Gamescom 2014 presentation begins in just a few short hours, 1:00 PM (Eastern Time) to be exact, but a final teaser trailer has confirmed one of their big announcements: Until Dawn.

Originally announced at Gamescom 2012, Until Dawn is a first-person adventure game inspired by 80s horror films, especially those of the “cabin in the woods” variety. And this new teaser features a faceless killer slicing and dicing someone while framed within the window of a cabin. Because this is a teaser, the words “Until Dawn” are never said, but the cabin imagery and the “Horror Reinvented” tagline point pretty strongly towards the return of Supermassive’s ode to 80s horror.

Oh, and apparently its moving to the PS4 as well. Groovy.

Until Dawn is still in development at Supermassive Games

untildawn-box-1000Like a masked killer stalking nubile teens in a wooded area, Until Dawn creeps around the corners of Sony’s future plans for the PS3. Sony hasn’t made an official announcement concerning the game in over a year, but the development team at Supermassive Games has assured Polygon they are still hard at work on the horror title:

“Until Dawn is very much still in development, going really well, and without any deliberations of possible cancelation that I’m aware of,” Supermassive’s Pete Samuels said. “We’re very pleased with the way it’s going. I’m sure that there will be more news soon, but I couldn’t say exactly when.”

Back in April, Sony released Until Dawn’s official box art. The image claimed that the title would be “Move Compatible” instead of “Move Required” as Sony originally announced. It’s unknown if that change is behind the release date delay (Until Dawn is still officially listed as a 2013 title on PlayStation.com) or if Supermassive is preparing to bring Until Dawn to the PS4.

Rumor: Until Dawn adds DualShock controller support

untildawn-box-1000Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead reboot isn’t the only “cabin in the woods” a group of unlucky teens will be exploring this year as the PS3-exclusive Until Dawn is still on track for a 2013 release. After the game was announced last year, developer Supermassive revealed that the game was designed for use with the PlayStation Move controller and that the motion control peripheral was required for Until Dawn. PS3 owners requested DualShock supprt, but a PlayStation Blog post from October reconfirmed that the Move was the only planned input option for the game.

Fast forward to today and the reveal of the game’s official boxart on Amazon. The banner along the top states that the game is “PlayStation Move Compatible” instead of “PlayStation Move Required,” implying that DualShock support will ultimately be included in the game.

So we should all celebrate, right? Not so fast. Until Dawn’s profile page on PlayStation.com shows a “PlayStation Move Required” banner along the top, but it also features a tiny picture of the new boxart that includes the “PlayStation Move Compatible” wording. We’ve contacted Sony and will update this story with the official word once we hear it.

At this point, those of us who want to play Until Dawn with a DualShock controller are still in limbo. Much like the limbo that trapped Bruce Campbell within the woods in Evil Dead II. And that turned out OK, he got a chainsaw hand out of the deal…

Of course, he had to cut off his possessed hand at the wrist first.

Supermassive says Happy Halloween with a new Until Dawn trailer

For all its rustic charm, a run-down “cabin in the woods” is definitely one of the most exciting places in the entire horror genre. From Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard’s recent film of the same name to the Sam Raimi-produced Evil Dead reboot, everyone is getting their own place among the trees.

Supermassive Games is attemtping to bring the “cabin in the woods” genre to gamers with their PlayStation Move-exclsuive title, Until Dawn. And we’re in for a treat as the developer has unveiled a special Halloween teaser trailer for the game:

Until Dawn puts you in control of eight teenagers, stranded in a remote location, under threat, and trying with all their might to survive ’til sunrise. When your friends are in danger, will you do everything you can to save them, or will you do nothing and watch them die?

Until Dawn is scheduled for a 2013 release.
