Warpback: What We Played in October 2014

warpback-1014-header

We here at Warp Zoned were busy in the month of October! A couple of us (John Scalzo and Andrew Rainnie!) had birthdays, and celebrated by – how else? – playing video games. We played a little bit of everything this month, from old Pokemon games to new Alien games and all that falls in between. Hit the jump to check out what we were playing all month!

You know, even when you’re an adult and can buy all the games you want with your own money, there’s something special about getting a new game for your birthday. That’s what happened to me when I unwrapped Hyrule Warriors last month. The Legend of Zelda/Dynasty Warriors mashup is great and even though I’ve never played a Dynasty Warriors game before (maybe once, ten years ago or something), the hack and slash gameplay here just feels great. And I’m loving that the game’s storyline is just a mixing pot of nearly every Zelda-related plot point from the last last 30 years.

Aside from Hyrule Warriors, I also got really into Angry Birds Transformers this month on my iPod Touch. Don’t laugh, but Rovio’s latest is actually a pretty great rail shooter and is a lot of fun in between commercials or in short bursts. Don’t laugh, it’s definitely more than meets the eye (OK, laugh a little.).

Finally this month, I put a little bit of time into Super Cyborg, an indie Contra homage for the PC; the final days of Doritos Crash Course 2, the Xbox 360 obstacle course platformer that went offline last month; and old school Rise of the Triad, because why not? I have no idea why I booted up ROTT, but it was super-satisfying the entire afternoon I played it.

October was a pretty busy gaming month for me! I finished up InFamous: First Light, and dove headfirst into the Hyper Light Drifter beta, which I adored. Anthony Amato and I started, finished, and re-started Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, and also started Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara. As always, I plugged away at Diablo III (still trying to get that Platinum!), and I’m coming close to beating Pokemon Platinum, which I really want to beat before the new ones come out. So many games…

October saw me turn 33, and since I haven’t really played much this month, I spent a couple of days crashed out on the couch, eating Nintendo-themed cupcakes and playing video games.

After sitting on my shelf for so long, I finally unwrapped Dark Souls, which seems to be a necessity nowadays, since nearly every new game is compared to it. It’s hard, and I’ve died a lot. I also tried out Bayonetta 2 and its predecessor on the Wii U. I had the original game on the PS3, but it was so riddled with bugs that I gave up. This is a whole lot more fun. The touch screen controls take a bit of getting used to, but it is just ludicrously entertaining.

I am still racing in Mario Kart 8, having unlocked the Mirror Class, and I have the first lot of DLC on pre-order. Link on a motorcycle anyone? And I was promised Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel for my birthday, but thanks to GAME’s shoddy delivery service, it has yet to arrive.

Well, this month I played my fair share of Minecraft: PlayStation 4 Edition. I spent a lot of time minin’ and buildin’ and gettin’ blown up by Creepers. I also started playing Alien: Isolation and I must say that the production values are top-notch. From the 70s-era 20th Century Fox opening, to the DOS-based operating system used in the original Alien, this game just screams fan service. I highly recommend it if you’re a Xenomorph fan. And because I love a good horror game during the month of October, I tried my hand at The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct. That was a mistake.
