Final Fantasy XV, Steep, SteinsGate 0, more added to PS Store

finalfantasyxv-header

PlayStation 4 owners will get a chance to play a game that has been in the works for more than a decade next week… but believe it or not, they’ll get the chance to do that this week as well. First announced in 2006, Square Enix released their epic action RPG, Final Fantasy XV, on the PS4 this week. Players will take control of Noctis and his friends as they embark on a quest to reclaim their homeland from an invading army.

Also available this week is Ubisoft’s snow-covered extreme sports sim, Steep. Players will be able to ski, snowboard, paraglide, or wingsuit down the Alps in a PS4 game that’ll be available this Friday.

Finally this week, PQube will continue the SteinsGate saga with SteinsGate 0 for the PS4 and Vita. The first game in the series is one of the most popular “visual novels” of all time, and the time-bending prequel takes players back to how it all began.

More information on all of these games can be found after the break. And a full rundown of this week’s new add-ons and discounts will soon be available at the PlayStation Blog. (more…)

Stardew Valley will be available for PS4, Xbox One on December 14; Nintendo Switch version also in development

stardewvalley-header

Stardew Valley, Concerned Ape’s farming RPG, will make its PS4 and Xbox One debut later this month. Writing on their official website, the developer confirmed the PS4 version of the game will launch on December 13, with the Xbox One version available a day later on December 14.

Earlier this year, Concerned Ape announced that Stardew Valley would also be released for the Wii U, but with the upcoming launch of the Switch, development on the game has shifted to Nintendo’s next console:

Stardew Valley will not be coming to the Wii U, however. Looking at Wii U and the current gaming landscape, we made the difficult choice to shift our development efforts to creating a version for Nintendo Switch. I am really looking forward to the Switch, and I believe that the Switch’s unique capabilities could create some exciting opportunities for Stardew Valley. I do want to emphasize that I am absolutely committed to seeing Stardew Valley on Nintendo platforms, and I really do appreciate your support and understanding in this.

Stardew Valley will likely be released for the Nintendo Switch sometime next year.

Final Fantasy XV launched today after a decade in development… so be sure to check out this pair of Launch Trailers

Ten Years. It’s a long time. If you were a young tween when Square Enix first announced Final Fantasy XV back in 2006 (when it was known as Final Fantasy Versus XIII), you’re likely getting ready to graduate from college.

But the epic RPG is finally available on store shelves today for the PS4 and Xbox One, and to go with it, Square Enix has uploaded a pretty impressive live-action Launch Trailer for the game. Featuring Florence + the Machine’s cover of “Stand By Me,” the trailer is meant to evoke the power of friendship and how it can help you fight any battle.

“Final Fantasy has a special place in the hearts of many and the team who worked long and hard on this project couldn’t be prouder to present Final Fantasy XV to fans around the world,” said Hajime Tabata, the game’s Director. “Today, we invite not only longtime fans but a new generation of gamers to a series beloved thanks to the engaging story telling, unique characters and captivating worlds that have become the hallmark of Final Fantasy over the years.”

A second Launch Trailer, this one featuring nothing but gameplay, can be found after the break. (more…)

Motiga and Perfect World have announced that an Open Beta for their free-to-play MOBA, Gigantic, will begin on December 8 for Xbox One and Windows 10 players.

Gigantic is a 5v5 game where players attack their opponent’s massive Guardian while attempting to defend their own. The Open Beta will offer cross-platform play between Xbox One and Windows 10 players, as well as three maps (“Siren’s Stand,” “Ghost Reef,” and “Sanctum Falls”) and a weekly rotation of six heroes (out of 16).

“With Gigantic, we are trying to create an entirely new competitive experience. Throughout development, Gigantic has gotten attention for its unique art style, whimsical setting and fast-paced gameplay, but our goal has always been something more,” said James Phinney, the Vice President of Product Development at Motiga. “We’ve sought to build a game full of intense moments and meaningful strategic choices, where there are many paths to victory and it’s always possible to come back and win.”

One final Closed Beta test will be held this weekend, and participants can join a match from Thursday, December 1 at 12:00 PM (Eastern Time) through Monday, December 5 at 3:00 AM (Eastern Time).

Users of Perfect World’s Arc Games platform will be able to join the Open Beta at a “to-be determined date” sometime after December 8.

Rumor: Marvel Vs Capcom 4 will be announced at PlayStation Experience 2016

capcomlogo

Capcom’s Yoshinori Ono recently told Famitsu that the company is planning to release new content for Street Fighter V through 2020. But the publisher might be ready to announce a new fighting game this weekend at the 2016 PlayStation Experience.

Polygon is reporting they’ve spoken to “multiple sources” that say Marvel Vs Capcom 4 will make its public debut this weekend and be released sometime in 2017. Their sources also revealed that Marvel will (unsurprisingly) limit the number of X-Men in the game. Instead, Marvel Vs Capcom 4 will feature a roster comprised mostly of characters that have appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe:

Fans of the series should expect Marvel vs. Capcom 4’s roster of Marvel characters to draw strongly from the cinematic universe that Marvel Studios has popularized — and has full control over — during the past decade. That means fighting game fans will more likely see characters plucked from The Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy films, and not from properties like the X-Men. Expect to see superheroes like Ant-Man and Groot make appearances, with characters of mutant origin — think Wolverine and Magneto — sitting out this entry.

Polygon would go on to receive a standard “Capcom does not comment on rumors or speculation” statement from a Capcom spokesperson in connection to their report. However, Marvel’s Jay Ong hinted at the possibility of a fourth game in the crossover fighting franchise earlier this year during the E3 Expo. So it could be a very fun weekend for fans of Capcom’s fighting games.

The last game in the franchise, Marvel Vs Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds, was released in early 2011 for the PS3 and Xbox 360.

No Man’s Sky “Foundation Update” is now available… and it includes a lot of new content

As promised, Hello Games has released the “Foundation Update” (Version 1.1) for No Man’s Sky. The update, which will be the first of many free updates, includes all of the new base-building options the developer talked about on Friday… along with a few surprises.

In addition to building a homestead, Version 1.1 of No Man’s Sky will allow players to create a Hydroponic Lab within their base and grow different plants. These plants will provide “a steady supply of resources” and eventually lead to the discovery of new resource elements. And for players who want to venture away from their base, they’ll be able to make camp anywhere with Save Points and color-coded Waypoints.

However, if you’d prefer to always be on the move, players can purchase a Freighter to move large amounts of resources across the galaxy. Freighters can also be crewed by three other characters to research new technologies. And speaking of resources, the “Foundation Update” will also add new biome and star-specific resource types to the game, as well as a simplified user interface.

But the biggest change to No Man’s Sky is the addition of three new game modes, including a brutal (and “much more challenging”) Survival Mode:

  • Normal Mode is the original chilled exploration experience
  • Creative Mode allows players to explore the universe without limits, and build a huge base
  • Survival Mode really changes the game, creating a much more challenging endurance experience

A trailer offering more details about No Man’s Sky’s “Foundation Update” is embedded above, and the full Patch Notes can be found at the game’s official website.
