Dean Dodrill (very vaguely) hints at new Dust announcement

The whole world missed this one last week, but even the vaguest hint about the future prospects of Dust: An Elysian Tail is something you want to follow up on.
Dean Dodrill, the one-man-band behind the Xbox Live Arcade hit, took to Twitter and revealed that he actually has two projects in the works, one of which is related to Dust in some way:
@glidding @freesmon @ricodragonborn Thanks all for playing. I’ll hopefully have something new to announce soon… Dust related and not.
— Dean Dodrill (@NoogyTweet) January 6, 2013
First announced in 2009, Dust: An Elysian Tail wasn’t added to the XBLA until this past August, so Dodrill might have a different definition of “soon” than you or I. That said, any announcement will probably be worth the wait.

Journey lands 11 nominations at 2013 DICE Awards

The Interactive Achievement Awards will be sporting a new look in 2013, but they’ve managed to recognize the great games all the same. Now known as the DICE Awards, Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences revealed their picks for the best games of the year this morning, nominating thatgamecompany’s Journey for an astonishing 11 awards.
The game is up for… deep breath… Game of the Year, Outstanding Achievement in Game Direction, Outstanding Innovation in Gaming, Downloadable Game of the Year, Casual Game of the Year, Outstanding Achievement in Art Direction, Outstanding Achievement in Gameplay Engineering, Outstanding Achievement in Online Gameplay, Outstanding Achievement in Original Music Composition, Outstanding Achievement in Sound Design, and Outstanding Achievement in Story.
Other Game of the Year contenders include Borderlands 2, Far Cry 3, The Walking Dead, and XCOM: Enemy Unknown. All four of those games are up for multiple awards, along with other big hitters like Halo 4 (six nominations) and Dishonored (five nominations).
The 2013 DICE Awards will be given out on February 7 during the 2013 DICE Summit. Our host for the evening will be Chris Hardwick, best known as the host of The Nerdist and Telltale’s Talking Dead (hmmm…).
The complete list of nominees can be found after the break. (more…)

Weekly Warp-Up: Naughty Gods Edition
No, that’s not a typo. Welcome to the Weekly Warp-Up, your weekly wrap-up of the biggest and the best articles posted at Warp Zoned this week…
We’re 13 days into 2013 and this year’s gaming landscape started to become a bit more focused this week. Sony dropped the God of War: Ascension multiplayer beta onto the PlayStation Network for PlayStation Plus users and we put Kratos and the other naughty gods through their paces. Spoiler alert: It’s pretty great.
This week also brought with it the first details about Pokemon X and Y, the first “main series” Pokemon games for the 3DS; Lego Marvel Super Heroes, a surprsing announcement from the DC Comics-owning WB Games; the standalone version of DayZ, which has gone through a complete overhaul; and the surprise announcement of Major League Baseball 2K13.
Are you looking for more news from last week? Then look no further than the link below. (more…)

New Releases: DMC Devil May Cry, BioShock Ultimate Rapture Edition
2013’s slim release schedule continues this week as only two new titles will make their way into stores. And only one of them can technically be called “new.”
That game is Ninja Theory’s new take on the Devil May Cry franchise, DMC: Devil May Cry. It’ll be available for the PS3 and Xbox 360. A PC release is planned for later in the month.
Also available this week is BioShock: Ultimate Rapture Edition, which includes the original BioShock, BioShock 2, and every piece of downloadable content. It too will be released for the PS3 and Xbox 360.
That’s it! See you next week.

Andrew McCutchen steals the MLB 13: The Show cover spot
Andrew McCutchen, the center fielder for the Pittsburgh Pirates, has been selected by fans as the cover athlete for Sony’s upcoming baseball sim, MLB 13: The Show.
With 108,148 total votes, “Cutch” annihilated the competition, finishing with almost 20,000 votes more than the second place C.C. Sabathia. The rest of the vote totals shook out like so:
3rd: Miguel Cabrera
4th: Matt Kemp
5th: Bryce Harper
6th: Buster Posney
7th: Ryan Braun
Poor Ryan Braun only only got 13,153 votes. Guess they don’t play a lot of PlayStation in Milwaukee. Must be a Microsoft town.
MLB: The Show will be available for the PS3 and Vita on March 5.

Warner Bros. has (probably) registered more Batman: Arkham Asylum-related domains
Batman: Arkham City wasn’t always known as Batman: Arkham City. Originally, WB Games referred to the project as Batman: Arkham Asylum 2 when it was first unveiled during the 2009 Spike TV Video Game Awards. it was only later that we would learn the game’s official title as part of a mass registration of domain names by WB Games.
Can you guess where this is going? Yup, Warner Bros. has gone on another domain registration spree.
The following domains were all registered by MarkMonitor, the domain management company that handles all of Warner Bros.’s web addresses. So it is (technically) unknown if Warner Bros. even owns these domains. But they probably do. And they could have been registered for any number of reasons. As misdirection… as a pre-emptive strike against domain squatters… to promote a product completely unrelated to video games… for some other reason entirely. It is literally too early to tell.
But here’s the list of domains anyway. Personally, I think “Batman: Arkham Knight” sounds kind of awesome…

Square Enix Europe promises update on Final Fantasy X HD soon

It’s not much to go on, but Square Enix Europe has taken to Twitter to reassure Final Fantasy fans that an update on Final Fantasy X HD is coming soon:
@dannymason1986 The world will get answers soon, we promise.
— SQUARE ENIX EUROPE (@SQUARE_ENIX_EU) January 10, 2013
Final Fantasy X HD was announced for the PS3 and Vita during the 2011 Tokyo Game Show and we’ve heard nary a peep about the project since then. So any acknowledgement of the game, even the vague promises of more information coming “soon,” is something to celebrate.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II was the best-selling game in all of 2012 too

As the best-selling game of the month in November and December, Call of Duty: Black Ops II has consistently blown away the competition since its November 13th launch. But seven weeks was all it needed to stand tall as the best-selling game of all of 2012.
The complete list doesn’t include many surprises. Like the list of bestsellers from December 2012, no original games are included in the full-year list. Microsoft’s Halo 4 was the only platform-exclusive title to make the list and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 was the only 2011 release able to retain its spot in the top ten.
In terms of retail sales, 2012 was a down year for the game industry. Retail sales of games, accessories, and consoles (not counting used games/hardware or downloadable games/content) totaled $13.26 billion, which was off 20% from 2011’s $16.99 billion total. perhaps this Fall’s expected launch of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox 720 will kickstart the industry in 2013.
The complete 2012 top ten can be found after the break. (more…)
