Weekly Warp-Up: We’re Not Ready to Announce It Edition

No, that’s not a typo. Welcome to the Weekly Warp-Up, your weekly wrap-up of the biggest and the best articles posted at Warp Zoned this week…

There was a lot of non-announcement announcements made this week.

First up, Blizzard’s Rob Pardo has revealed that the developer has a version of Diablo III “up and running” on console hardware. But they’re still not ready to announce it and there’s a possibility that the game may never be released.

Next, Valve’s Gabe Newell has confirmed that his company is hard at work on the long-rumored “Steam Box” and will probably release it next year. But any details about the name, the price, and what it’s capable of are still up in the air.

Finally, a job listing posted by PopCap Games has revealed the developer is working on a “AAA game.” It probably won’t be some brutal bloodbath, but it does use the same engine that powers Battlefield 3 and Medal of Honor: Warfighter. Alright then.

And here’s a real announcement for good measure… There’s just two more days to enter our contest to win a Best of Bond two-CD set and a copy of 007 Legends for the Xbox 360.

Hit the jump for more of this week’s biggest news stories. (more…)

God of War: Ascension beta begins on January 8 for PS Plus subscribers

Sony has announced that God of War: Ascension‘s multiplayer beta will begin on January 8. All PlayStation Plus subscribers will be invited to download the beta client, and they’ll be treated to “visceral, larger than life, online combat.”

Here’s a few more details about the beta straight from Sony Santa Monica (via the PlayStation Blog):

So the burning-in-Hades question is, what will you play in our Multiplayer Beta? A visceral, larger than life, online combat experience for starters. We are kicking off the Beta with our signature Team Favor of the Gods mode and the yet-to-be-seen Favor of the Gods mode, which plays like Team Favor of the Gods, but without the teams. In both modes, you’ll fight to reach the requisite number of favor points from the Gods, earning points via kills, bonus brutal kills, opening chests, capturing domination points, and, if you’re skillful enough, performing executions using the Spear of Olympus.

God of War: Ascension will be released exclusively for the PS3 on March 12, 2013.

Sleeping Dogs: The Zodiac Tournament DLC available on December 18

sleepingdogszodiacThe second downloadable expansion for Sleeping Dogs, “The Zodiac Tournament,” will be available to download on December 18.

Unlike the self-contained storyline featured in “Nightmare at North Point,” “The Zodiac Tournament” will hook into the main game and add a mysterious island to the game map. Don’t worry, the island isn’t populated by Smoke Monsters or misfit toys, but it does host a fighting tournament that Wei Shen can enter if he’s tough enough.

As you can see from the poster on your right, “The Zodiac Tournament” will draw heavily from Bruce Lee’s classic film, Enter the Dragon. It even includes a Mr. Han-like evil mastermind.

Rockstar wants to make a GTA game that includes Liberty City, Vice City, San Andreas

grandtheftautologo

If you’ve ever wondered where Rockstar Games plans to take the Grand Theft Auto series after GTA5, we might have gotten our answer from one of the game’s producer, Leslie Benzies.

Digital Trends recently sat down with Benzies to discuss Grand Theft Auto: Vice City‘s re-releases on mobile platforms. In the course of the conversation, Benzies said that while the company loves the Vice City setting, he doesn’t know if it would work outside of the 1980s Scarface/Miami Vice setting.

And that’s when he revealed that Rockstar’s dream is to create a game that includes all of its major cities:

Of course at some point we would like to have one big world containing all our cities and let the player fly between them and revisit their favorite areas, and in that context reimagining Vice City would be very interesting.

So, Grand Theft Auto VI for the PS4/Orbis/Thebes and Xbox 720/Durango confirmed?

Cliff Bleszinski: Starting a new studio is a matter of when

cliffybGears of War developer Cliff Bleszinski is getting closer to making a decision on his future in the game industry.

After leaving Epic Games in October, CliffyB embarked on a grand tour of game development houses including Activision, EA, and Double Fine. But in an interview with the hosts of G4’s X-Play, Bleszinski revealed that his next job will likely be as the head of a new studio.

Bleszinski told X-Play, “It’s not a matter of if. It’s a matter of when and with who.” And after this new studio opens, he may not be working on Gears of War-like games anymore as Bleszinski added, “I don’t really want the whole chainsaw gun to be my legacy.”

It makes sense. After all, his first game was the cartoony platformer Jazz Jackrabbit.

Hitman HD Trilogy officially announced

hitmanhdtrilogy-header

I think it’s fair to say that Hitman: Absolution has divided the video game community since its November release (to say nothing of the battle against the naughty nuns). But Agent 47 will get another chance at redemption in 2013 when Square Enix releases the Hitman HD Trilogy for the PS3 and Xbox 360.

Scheduled for release on January 29 in North America (February 1 in Europe), the Hitman HD Trilogy will include Hitman 2: Silent Assassin, Hitman: Contracts, and Hitman: Blood Money. Expect the usual complement of Achievements/Trophies and a high definition graphical makeover.

Dead Space 3 adds Kinect functionality

I wonder if it’ll recognize your screams of sheer terror?

Electronic Arts has announced that Dead Space 3 will ship with Kinect support when it’s released for the Xbox 360 on February 8, 2013. Players will be able to use voice commands during co-op play to “share health or ammo, find objectives, revive one another and more.”

“The voice commands in Dead Space 3 give players a unique way to take down the terror, whether they choose to face the Necromorphs alone in single-player, or alongside a friend with drop-in / drop-out co-op,” said Steve Papoutsis, Executive Producer on Dead Space 3. “Dead Space 3 delivers the action-horror experience our fans have come to know and love. And with the ability to survive the adventure alone, with a friend, or with Kinect, we’re excited about extending the spine-tingling Dead Space experience to a whole new audience of players.”

Dead Space will also be available for the PC and PS3.
