Daily Scoop: March 28, 2017 – Hyper Light Drifter on sale at Steam!

It’s just one week until Persona 5 hits my PlayStation 4, and I’m not sure what to play in the meantime! I don’t want to start anything that will last more than a week, but I also don’t want to not play anything. But to be honest all I can think about is Persona 5, so what’s the point? Maybe I’ll just watch television for a week.

Anyway, let’s talk about Persona 5 – I mean, today’s deals! First up is the Humble Hooked on Multiplayer Bundle, which just went live! Pay $1 for Tricky Towers, Eon Altar Episode 1, and Primal Carnage: Extinction. Beat the average to unlock Move or Die, Ultimate Chicken Horse, and Rampage Knights. Finally, pay $10 or more to unlock Helldivers and the Ranger Pack DLC.

There are some amazing deals happening at Steam as well! The Midweek Madness is one of my favorites, Hyper Light Drifter. Get the game alone for $9.99, or get the game and the soundtrack for $12.49. The Daily Deal is Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen, which is on sale for $11.99. You can also pick up the soundtrack for an additional $5.19.

Bungie and Nathan Fillion tease Destiny 2’s “Worldwide Reveal Trailer” with “Last Call” teaser

An official Destiny 2 announcement is coming soon, and to help build the hype, Bungie released a brand new teaser trailer today starring everyone’s favorite Vanguard, Cayde-6 (Firefly‘s Nathan Fillion). The cyborg is seen lamenting the destruction of his favorite bar… which is then interrupted by several huge explosions.

Destiny 2’s “Worldwide Reveal Trailer” will be available on Thursday, March 30, at 1:00 PM (Eastern Time). Earlier this week, Bungie also unveiled the game’s official logo.

First episode from Telltale’s Guardians of the Galaxy series will debut on April 18

Telltale Games has announced the first episode from their upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy series will be released on April 18. Titled “Tangled Up In Blue,” it’ll be available as part of a Season Pass ($19.99), or as a standalone download ($4.99).

As expected, Guardians of the Galaxy will be available to download for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One, as well as mobile devices running iOS or Android. A “Season Pass Disc” that contains the first episode, along with downloadable access to all subsequent episodes, will also be released for the PS4 and Xbox One on May 2.

Telltale will release the first trailer for “Tangled Up In Blue” this Thursday, March 30, at noon (Eastern Time). But for now, we’ve got new artwork from the game featuring Thanos doing battle with Star-Lord, Groot, Rocket, Drax, Gamora. (more…)

USC takes back its crown as 2017’s best Game Design program for undergraduates

After losing out to the University of Utah in last year’s ranking, the University of Southern California has once again topped the Princeton Review’s list of “Top Undergraduate Schools to Study Game Design” for 2017. The Princeton Review also found a lot to recommend about USC’s Game Design program at the Graduate level. The school’s more advanced course of study came in at #5 in Princeton Review’s ranking of Graduate programs.

“Game design is an exciting field and programs are springing up in colleges all over the world,” said Robert Franek, the Princeton Review’s Editor-In-Chief. “We want to help students find the best program for their needs and interests. The top schools on our lists have outstanding faculties and great facilities which will give students the skills and experience they need to pursue a career in this dynamic and burgeoning field.”

While the Utes at the University of Utah aren’t the top choice anymore, their program still ranked #3 in both the Undergraduate and Graduate rankings. Other schools that broke into the top ten on both lists include the Rochester Institute of Technology (#2 in Undergraduate, #4 in Graduate), the DigiPen Institute of Technology (#4 and #7), New York University (#7 and #6), and Rexel University (#9 and #8).

World Video Game Hall of Fame announces 12 finalists for the Class of 2017

Street Fighter II: The World Warrior fought against Mortal Kombat for the hearts (and quarters) of arcade players in the early 90s. Next month, they’ll square off again as two (of the 12) finalists the World Video Game Hall of Fame’s Class of 2017.

Announced this morning by The Strong’s International Center for the History of Electronic Games, this year’s finalists also include Donkey Kong, Final Fantasy VII, Halo: Combat Evolved, Myst, Pokemon Red and Blue, Portal, Resident Evil, Tomb Raider, Wii Sports, and Windows Solitaire.

“These 12 World Video Game Hall of Fame finalists span decades, gaming platforms, and countries of origin… but what they all have in common is their undeniable impact on the world of gaming and popular culture,” said Jon-Paul C. Dyson, the Director of The Strong’s International Center for the History of Electronic Games. “Whether it’s a pop culture icon like Donkey Kong, an innovator and true original like Portal, or a game like Wii Sports that transformed millions of living rooms into interactive zones for all ages, they’re among the most influential games of all time.”

An international advisory committee made up of journalists and scholars familiar with the history of video games will advise the Hall of Fame’s selection of this year’s inductees, which will be announced on Thursday, May 4, at 10:30 AM (Eastern Time).

Splatoon 2 Global Testfire Impressions: This Pre-Release Test Proved Nintendo’s Shooter Franchise is Still “Fresh”

Even though it shipped to stores in a half-finished state, the near-instantaneous success of Splatoon guaranteed that a sequel would make an appearance sooner rather than later. But with Splatoon’s rise coinciding with the Wii U’s collapse, that sequel is now bound for a Summer 2017 launch on the Nintendo Switch. And the whole world got to test it out this weekend as part of the Splatoon 2 Global Testfire.

Valkyria Revolution will be released for PS4, Xbox One, Vita on June 27

Sega announced this afternoon that Valkyria Revolution will be released for the PS4 and Xbox One on June 27. The game will also be released for the Vita on the same day, and it’ll be available as a digital download exclusively through the PlayStation Store.

Fans familiar with the Valkyria franchise’s turn-based gameplay will be in for a surprise with Valkyria Revolution. According to Sega, Revolution will include “new characters, a new world, and new gameplay mechanics” when it launches this Summer:

In the wake of a revolution, Jutland’s elite soldiers, the Vanargand, must band together to defeat the Ruzi Empire and stop death itself–the Valkyria. This grizzled anti-Valkyria squad is equipped with advanced mana weaponry and has the powerful ability to wield ragnite spells to combat this terrifying threat. The unit is comprised of soldiers who have a high affinity for ragnite, and even Jutland’s own Princess Ophelia has joined the ranks. The princess carries the utmost love for her country and has answered the call of duty to liberate those who are suffering from the Ruzi’s tyranny. However, Amleth Gronkjaer, the commanding officer of Vanargand hides a terrible secret. Is he friend or foe to the country he has sworn to protect?

As part of this announcement, Sega also confirmed that Valkyria Revolution’s first print run will be available in a limited “Vanargand Edition.” This special edition of the game comes with a Metal Vanargand Pin and a 12-Track Soundtrack composed by Yasunori Mitsuda.

Daily Scoop: March 27, 2017 – New Weeklong Deals at Steam!

So, instead of trying to decide which of the games in my pile to start, I decided to go back and try to finish up the Titanfall 2 campaign, and boy am I ever glad I did! I’ve been having a blast with it the past few days, and I think I’m almost finished. I wasn’t thrilled about it when it came out, but it’s been super exciting since I picked it back up again!

Speaking of exciting, there are some super great sales happening at the Humble Store! Earth Defense Force 4.1 The Shadow of New Despair is $31.49, For the King is $12.74, HackyZack is $8.99, and Gunman Taco Truck is $5.99, among many others!
