Supergiant will release Pyre for PC and PS4 on July 25

Supergiant Games has announced that their upcoming action RPG, Pyre, will be released for the PC and PS4 on July 25. Pyre takes place in a limbo-like realm where players recruit refugees to compete in a mythical 3v3 sport to earn a chance at “enlightenment.”

Greg Kasavin, Supergiant’s Creative Director, revealed a few more details about Pyre’s world on the PlayStation Blog today:

Pyre is a party-based RPG in which you lead a band of exiles to freedom through ancient competitions spread across a vast, mystical purgatory. Who shall return to glory, and who shall remain in exile to the end of their days? Find out during the course of the single-player campaign (and maybe rack up a new Platinum Trophy while you’re at it).

This is the biggest and most imaginative world yet from us at Supergiant! You’ll get to know an ensemble cast of characters struggling to earn back their freedom as you make your way across the forsaken land called the Downside. Characters in Pyre come in all shapes and sizes, from hulking demons grown strong from their struggle to survive, to the winged Harps, who plot against their enemies from their mountain nests. Everyone in Pyre has a unique story behind their exile, and what might be in store for them if only they could return.

Kasavin also talked more about “Rites,” the fictional sport at the center of Pyre:

Central to Pyre is the ancient competition called the Rites. Each Rite plays out like an intense close-quarters mystical battle, where the object is to extinguish your adversary’s signal flame before they can do the same to you. You’ll have to outsmart and outmaneuver your opponents to succeed — or you can banish them outright with a powerful aura blast.

Finally, Kasavin revealed that Pyre won’t have a “Game Over” screen, and players who fail a Rite will continue their journey with no loss of progress. But hopefully they learned something from the experience.

Deep End Games delivers a Launch Trailer for Perception on PC; PS4 and Xbox One launch pushed back a week

Perception is now available to download for the PC, through Steam and GOG, and The Deep End Games has unveiled a brand new Launch Trailer to go along with its release.

The Deep End Games is made up of developers that previously worked on BioShock for Irrational Games and Dead Space for Visceral, and they’ve used that experience to create a new horror adventure that takes players inside a haunted mansion known as Echo Bluff. However, navigating the mansion won’t be easy as the protagonist, Cassie, is blind:

In Perception, players take on the role of Cassie, a blind woman able to sense the world around her via echolocation, who is plagued with dreams of a haunted New England estate. Armed with only a cell phone with spotty reception, Cassie heads to Echo Bluff, and it turns out the place is worse than her nightmares. A wraith-like inhabitant known as “The Presence” hunts the young intruder, but Cassie remains determined to uncover the secrets held within the estate’s walls.

Cassie must use her ultra-sensitive hearing to maneuver around the ancient estate and uncover the mysteries within. Each tap of her cane reveals the scenery around her, but also draws in the Presence, who is listening for the young woman. Cassie must avoid detection wherever possible in this cat-and-mouse thriller.

Cassie’s only hope at survival is to uncover the storied past of Echo Bluff, or she risks becoming one of its victims.

Perception was also expected to launch for the PS4 and Xbox One this week, but The Deep End Games has sadly been forced to push its console debut back a week. It should be available to download through the PlayStation Store and Xbox Games Store on June 6.

Square Enix’s Tokyo RPG Factory will bring Lost Sphear to PC, PS4, Switch in Early 2018

Square Enix and Tokyo RPG Factory have announced they’ll bring the retro-styled RPG Lost Sphear to the PC, PS4, and Switch in Early 2018. Similar in style to I Am Setsuna, Lost Sphear will transport players to a world where people have begun to mysteriously disappear:

To stop the world from being lost forever, Kanata and his comrades set out to rebuild the world around them with the power of Memory by manifesting thoughts into matter.

According to Square Enix, Lost Sphear will expand on I Am Setsuna’s gameplay system with “a revamped ATB battle system where players can strategize and freely adjust their placement mid-fight, seamless environments, and various locations to explore.”

Lost Sphear will be available as a digital download on all three platforms, but players interested in obtaining a physical copy can purchase one exclusively through the Square Enix Online Store. We’ll hear more about Lost Sphear soon, but in the meantime, the first trailer has been embedded above.

Iron Galaxy will add Thunder’s brother Eagle to Killer Instinct in June

Killer Instinct was part of this weekend’s Combo Breaker 2017 event, and Microsoft used the opportunity to announce that Eagle, Chief Thunder’s older brother, will be added to the game in June. Aside from the short teaser trailer’s promise of epic archery skills, that’s about all we know about the character.

Developer Iron Galaxy closed the book on Killer Instinct’s third season last July, but since the start of 2017, they’ve added several “remix” characters to the game including Kilgore and Shin Hisako. It’s unknown if the team considers Eagle an original character or yet another remix.

Finally, congratulations to Rob “Valoraxe” Doherty, the winner of this year’s Combo Breaker Finals.

Get a look at Far Cry 5’s creepy cult in the game’s first trailer

As foretold, Ubisoft fully unveiled Far Cry 5 today, and confirmed the game will be released for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One on February 27, 2018. The first trailer for the first Far Cry game set on US soil introduces us to the residents of Hope County, Montana, and the “fanatical doomsday cult” that has infiltrated the town:

As the new junior deputy of fictional Hope County, Montana, players will find that their arrival accelerates a years-long silent coup by a fanatical doomsday cult, the Project at Eden’s Gate, igniting a violent takeover of the county. Caught off guard and drawn into a power struggle, players must disrupt the carefully laid plans of the Project at Eden’s Gate and fan the fires of resistance to help liberate the Hope County community and themselves.

Taking control of unique and customizable character, players will attempt to take down the cult alongside a large cast of characters, and an even larger arsenal of vehicles and weapons:

Under siege and cut off from the rest of the world, players will join forces with residents of Hope County and form The Resistance. The fight against the cult will take players to unique locations throughout Hope County that provide different gameplay experiences. During their journey, players can fly planes to engage cult forces in aerial dogfights across Big Sky Country. While tracking down cult members and gathering resources for survival across farmland, forests, mountains, and rivers, players can get behind the wheel of iconic American muscle cars, big rigs, ATVs and boats. Vehicles also provide refuge when under attack by animals or as a way to quickly escape when things don’t go as planned.

Like previous games in the Far Cry franchise, players will have total freedom to tackle the each situation as they seen fit. But Far Cry 5 will also introduce a cooperative element for the first time, and players will be able to team up with a friend to experience the entire story together.

To further introduce players to the residents of Hope County, Ubisoft also released a series of “Character Vignette” trailers for three members of The Resistance. You can find them after the break. And we can expect to hear more about Far Cry 5 during this year’s E3 Expo. (more…)

The Amazing Race asked its contestants to play Street Fighter V last night

The Amazing Race sent the remaining four teams to South Korea last night, and host Phil Keoghan pitted them against professional Street Fighter V players for the chance to move on.

It’s easy to assume that racers wouldn’t have a chance against Seon-Woo “Infiltration” Lee and Chung-Gon “Poongko” Lee, but The Amazing Race found a way to make it a bit more fair. After ten wins, the pro players had to play with one hand behind their back. And after 20 wins, they were blindfolded. Even with these handicaps, it took quite a while for the racers to beat the pro players.

Clips from the episode are available after the break, and be on the lookout for London’s impressive button mashing style. The finale for this season of The Amazing Race will air on CBS on June 1. (more…)
