newreleases100813

All you Pokemaniacs can rejoice, for it is time. Pokemon X and Pokemon Y, the first “main series” Pokemon games for the 3DS, will be released this week.

If you’d prefer something a little more out there (and you own a PS3), there’s Quantic Dream’s latest action/adventure game, Beyond: Two Souls. The supernatural Saga of Jodie (played by Ellen Page) and her doctor (played by Willem Dafoe) is sure to feature plenty of the developer’s signature weirdness and grandeur.

And if you want to go REALLY out there, NIS America will release Disgaea D2: A Brighter Darkness for the PS3. The latest game in the insane strategy RPG franchise is a direct sequel to the to the first game in the series, Disgaea: Hour of Darkness, which should please its many fans.

This week’s last “new” releases is Ubisoft’s Just Dance 2014. The dancing franchise will boogie its way (again) onto the PS3, Wii, Wii U, and Xbox 360 this week. PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game are set to be released in November.

Finally, a trio of re-releases should keep budget hunters happy as 2K Games/Gearbox will release Borderlands 2: Game of the Year Edition, Bethesda/Arkane will release Dishonored: Game of the Year Edition, and Capcom will release the Capcom Essentials collection (which contains Dead Rising 2, Devil May Cry 4, Mega Man 10, Resident Evil 6, and Super Street Fighter IV).

A complete list of this week’s new releases can be found after the break. (more…)

SCE WWS President says The Last Guardian is still in development, possibly for PS4

thelastguardian-header

What’s going on with The Last Guardian? It was a no-show at this year’s E3 Expo and SCEA President Jack Tretton’s admission that the game was “on hiatus” only stoked the “it’s been canceled!” fires. Thankfully, Shuhei Yoshida, the President of SCE Worldwide Studios, recently spoke to GamesIndustry International and cleared everything up. And you’ll NEVER guess what he had to say.

OK, that’s a lie, The Last Guardian’s final destination should be obvious to everyone by now.

First about that “hiatus.” Yoshida explained that Tretton misspoke and that development on The Last Guardian never stopped. Instead, the “hiatus” referred to its presence at Sony events such as this year’s E3 Press Conference. Considering the fact that The Last Guardian has been MIA for several years now, this answer makes a lot of sense.

But the real news to come out of this conversation is that The Last Guardian may have moved to the PS4. When asked what platform the game was in development for, Yoshida did’t comment either way. He wouldn’t say the game is coming to the PS4, but he also didn’t say it was still in development for the PS3.

What he did say was that the game is being “re-engineered” and that Sony is waiting for the best time to re-reveal it to the world:

“So, we’re waiting for the right time to re-introduce The Last Guardian in an appropriate way. I can’t… Well, the game is in development, and it’s well staffed, and [Fumito Ueda, the game’s Director] is here, working – even though he’s not a Sony employee, he’s dedicated to the product. But we’re not ready to update yet.”

So there you have it. The Last Guardian is still in active development and will be re-revealed someday… probably for the PS4.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director’s Cut will be released on October 22

The Square Enix name has taken an undeniable hit in credibility over the last few years. A significant amount of the company’s titles are simply re-releases of much older games (Final Fantasy VII for PC, Final Fantasy III for PSP, etc.). In amongst all of these titles was a game developed by Square’s Eidos Montreal studio, Deus Ex: Human Revolution. The game received widespread critical acclaim and spawned a number of extended universe installments in other media (such as books, comics, action figures, and a mobile game called Deus Ex: The Fall). CBS Films has even acquired the rights to create a film adaptation of Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Of course, true to form, an improved version of the game is being re-released later this month: Deus Ex: Human Revolution – Director’s Cut.

Originally announced as a Wii U exclusive title, it was revealed ahead of the game’s originally release date (May 2013) that the Director’s Cut would go multiplatform for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 as well. The Director’s Cut will feature updated visuals, overhauled boss fights, refined game balance and combat, and over eight hours of developer commentary. Additionally, the bonus content, “Tong’s Rescue” mission and the entire “Missing Link” chapter, has been integrated seamlessly into the narrative flow of the Director’s Cut. The game will also offer a great deal of exclusive second screen features for the Wii U GamePad, Microsoft’s SmartGlass, and the PlayStation Vita.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution – Director’s Cut will hit shelves on October 22nd, and it’s quite clear that Square Enix hopes the game can recreate its original success.

Beyond: Two Souls Hands-On Preview: Into the Depths of the Supernatural

beyondtwosouls-header

Beyond: Two Souls is the latest game from French company Quantic Dream, the same team that brought us Indigo Prophecy (AKA Fahrenheit) and Heavy Rain. In Beyond, you play as Jodie, a woman who has had a supernatural entity attached to her since she was a child. The entity’s name is Aiden, and players can control Jodie or Aiden, depending on what the situation calls for. A new demo for the game has shown us that while Quantic Dream still relies heavily on QTEs (as they did in their previous games), they have done much to expand on – and improve – their unique style of gameplay. Bungie will release Destiny in Spring 2014; early 2014 beta planned

It is your destiny to watch this brand new Destiny trailer, dubbed “The Moon,” and to learn that Bungie plans to release their ambitious new shooter in Spring 2014 for the PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.

But first, the developer plans to hold a beta test in the first few months of 2014 for the game’s online features and (almost) everyone who pre-orders is invited. The beta will be available on all platforms, but you have to pre-order the game from a participating set of retailers (Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop, or Walmart) to receive your access code.

Harold Ryan, Bungie’s President, is very excited about the beta’s possibilities: “From day one Destiny has been an incredibly bold vision that Activision shares with Bungie. Destiny is a massive universe that is populated by the players, and for that reason we need fans to get their hands on the game, fans all around the world. We can’t wait!”

Even though the beta was announced yesterday, everyone who has already pre-ordered Destiny from the list of approved retailers will receive beta access.
