NCAA Football 13 is the bestselling game of July 2012
The NPD Group has released their list of the ten bestselling games of July 2012 and, surprising no one, NCAA Football 13 took the top spot.
The football sim was the only new release from the month of July to crack the top ten, but to be fair, there weren’t very many games released last month. Instead, the top ten is populated by holdovers like Lego Batman 2, The Amazing Spider-Man, and two Call of Duty games (Black Ops and Modern Warfare 3). According to Joystiq, this motley crew could only manage sales of $260.7 million, a 23% drop from July 2011’s take of $338.5 million.
The full top ten is available after the break. (more…)

PSN Today: Sound Shapes, King of Fighters XIII, Hyperdimension Neptunia MK2

Sony’s PSN Play promotion continues this week with the musical platformer Sound Shapes. Described as “equal parts instrument and game,” Sound Shapes is like nothing we’ve ever seen before. Best of all, the game is available for both the PSN and Vita, and purchasing the game on one platform will net you the other for free.
Also available this week is a pair of PS3 Full Games: Hyperdimension Neptunia MK2, one of the most bizarre RPGs to ever emerge from Japan, and The King of Fighters XIII, the latest game in the long-running fighting franchise.
Hit the jump for more information on these games and head over to the PlayStation Blog for a list of this week’s new game add-ons, PlayStation Plus bonsues, and trailers. (more…)

Do you want a new Need For Speed: Most Wanted gameplay trailer?
Did you say no? Well too bad. This new Need for Speed: Most Wanted trailer introduces you to the Corvette ZR1, The Koenigsegg Agera R, and the Hummer H1 Alpha, just a few of the stars of the new game.
Most Wanted is not about “pristine cars sitting untouched in a showroom,” so get that thought out of your head. This game is about getting dirty and smashy, driving fast (pedal to the metal and all that), and taking on your rivals as well as the police. The open world of Fairhaven City features heavily policed freeways, downtown grids, industrial zones, tunnels, storm drains, and high-speed open roads.
Need for Speed: Most Wanted will be out on October 30 for Android, iOS, PC, PS3, PlayStation Vita, and Xbox 360.
The Vita-Cycle: How the PS3 and Vita Can Live Peacefully Together

If you’ve been on the Internet at anytime since February 2012 and ever happened to look at any gaming news site, you’ve probably seen the enclosed, yet cumbersome quarrel of fanboys in regards to Sony’s dream device, the PS Vita. The two biggest arguments seem to be “the Vita has no games,” or “the Vita needs more games that the PS3 has!”
The first argument is undeniable. Being the diverse gamer and alleged hyper-consumer that I am, I own ten retail Vita games and three digital games. That’s pretty good, considering the system hasn’t even been out for half a year yet. But this is just me – the case of the person who genuinely gives nearly every game a chance, and generally enjoys most games. I can understand how other people might have more discerning tastes, or how they are getting turned off by specific genres here and there. For those people, it’s completely reasonable to think that the Vita has “no games.” (more…)
Kaz Yamauchi reconfirms Gran Tursimo 6 is in development
Kazunori Yamauchi, the creator of Gran Turismo, has reconfirmed that Gran Turismo 6 is in development, and has been since the completion of Gran Turismo 5. He made the announcement at the China Joy gaming event in Shanghai, according to Kotaku. Yamauchi also told the crowd about bringing the series to the Vita, saying, “If we made it, I’d want it to have this: the ability to play and use 3G whenever.” Well, the Vita sounds like a perfect match, in that case!
This was confirmed back in November of last year, but it’s nice to have reconfirmation. As much as I hate to admit it, I agree with the end of that Kotaku article, where Brian Ashcraft wrote that “now the race is to see how many Forza games rival studio Turn 10 can race out before Gran Turismo 6 is eventually completed in the year 20XX.” Well played, Ashcraft. Well played.

Wreck-It Ralph joins Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed as guest driver

Sega has announced that the titular star of Disney’s upcoming movie Wreck-It Ralph will join NASCAR driver Danica Patrick as a guest racer in the upcoming Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed.
Masanao Maeda, Chairman and Chief Content Officer for Sega of America, was bursting with enthusiasm when the newest addition to the racing roster was made public: “Wreck-It Ralph will make a great addition to our stellar cast in Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. Disney has created a unique film experience that will appeal to gamers of all ages, and our video game collaboration will give fans the opportunity to interact with their character on the small screen as well.”
Wreck-It Ralph‘s director Rich Moore was also over the moon about the character’s inclusion in Sega’s racer: “To have Wreck-It Ralph included in Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is a dream come true. The film pays homage to the video games I loved as a kid, including Sonic the Hedgehog in a special cameo, so being able to see Wreck-It Ralph in a real video game alongside Sonic and other iconic Sega characters is unbelievably exciting for me and should be a treat for fans!”
Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed will launch in November for Xbox 360, PC, PS3, Vita, 3DS and Wii U. Wreck-It Ralph debuts in cinemas that same month, along with a Wii and 3DS game of the same name.
Cole McGrath and Jak join PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale

As promised, Sony has revealed two more fighters for PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale at Comic-Con this weekend. Say hello to Cole McGrath from the InFamous series and Jak from the Jak & Daxter series.
Daniel Maniago, the Community Manager from developer SuperBot Entertainment had plenty to say about the new additions to the roster:
Players familiar with Jak and Daxter’s arsenal will immediately recognize some of the weaponry utilized in PlayStation All-Stars including the Blaster, Needle Lazer, Gyro Burster, and Mass Inverter. When the going gets tough, Jak has the ability to unleash the powers of both Dark and Light Jak to even the playing field, as seen in Jak II and Jak 3 respectively. Daxter even lends a hand in Jak’s melee attacks.
Cole takes advantage of a wide array of abilities in InFamous, an experience we hoped to emulate when incorporating him into the game. He is a well-rounded fighter who is effective at both close and long range combat, and is highly mobile as well. Players can command both his electrokinesis and cryokinesis, using these powers to assault opponents from a safe distance or propel himself towards the action. With these abilities, Cole proves to be a formidable adversary for the rest of the PlayStation All-Stars cast!
Check out Jak and Cole in action in two new PlayStation All-Stars trailers after the break. (more…)

Lego Batman 2 rises to the top of the June 2012 bestsellers list

With editions on seven different platforms, Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes rose to the top of The NPD Group’s monthly list of bestselling games. The remainder of the list was split between new releases, May holdovers, and Fall 2011 games that are still popular.
There were only a handful of new games available in June with Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier (#2), Pokemon Conquest (#7), and The Amazing Spider-Man (#10) all earning spots in the top ten. Grasshopper’s Lollipop Chainsaw didn’t make the cut, continuing Suda 51’s lack of success at the register.
An astounding four games from Fall 2011 continue to sell strongly enough to make the top ten: NBA 2K12 (#5), Batman: Arkham City (#6, boosted by the newly released Game of the Year Edition), Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (#8), and Battlefield 3 (#9). I’m sure it helps that all were among the best-reviewed games of last year.
As a whole, game and hardware sales are down 29% from June 2011, according to Joystiq.
A complete list of last month’s best-selling games can be found after the break. (more…)
