Her Story wins Seumas McNally Grand Prize at 2016 IGF Awards

Sam Barlow’s Her Story won the “Seumas McNally Grand Prize” at the 2016 Independent Games Festival Awards last night. The game, which resurrected full motion video storytelling to tease out its central mystery, was also the recipient of the “Excellence In Narrative” trophy.
It was a great night for independent gaming as several other games were also honored at this year’s IGF Awards. The spooky Oxenfree won “Excellence In Visual Art,” the ultra-tense Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes won “Excellence in Design,” and the hypnotic and soothing sounds of Mini Metro won “Excellence In Audio.” “The Nuovo Award,” which recognizes “abstract and unconventional games,” was awarded to Cibele for its look at online relationships. And the “Best Student Game” of the year was Jenny Jiao Hsia and Alec Thomson’s Beglitched.
Finally, the “ID@Xbox Rising Star Award” was given to Girls Make Games for The Hole Story and Undertale, developed by Toby Fox, won the “Audience Award.”
Congratulations to everyone who was a winner last night at the 2016 Independent Games Festival Awards. The complete list of winners, in handy list format, can be found after the break. And don’t forget, if you’re in San Francisco for the Game Developers Conference, every nominee from this year’s contest is available to try out at the IGF Pavilion. (more…)

Xbox Store Today: EA Sports UFC 2, Shadow Complex Remastered, Dungeon of the Endless, more
It’s a big day for the Xbox Games Store as seven new Xbox One titles are now available to download.
Leading things off is EA’s EA Sports UFC 2. As you might expect from its numerical suffix, UFC 2 is EA’s second stab at a mixed martial arts simulation. The megapublisher has added hundreds of fighters to the game as well as improved the “Knockout Physics System” in an attempt to create the most authentic MMA adaptation ever.
Also available today is Shadow Complex Remastered, Chair’s modern-day take on the “Metroidvania” genre. Originally released for the Xbox 360 in 2009, the remastered edition of the game includes enhanced graphics, all-new dynamic melee take-downs, and additional Achievements and Master Challenges. A second side-scroller will get an Xbox One re-release today as Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse is also now available to download. WayForward has promised that the third game in the Shantae series is the biggest yet, and the first to debut on the Xbox One.
Finally today, Amplitude will bring Dungeon of the Endless and its unique “Rogue-Like Dungeon-Defense” hybrid to the Xbox One.
More information on all of these games (and several other new releases) can be found after the break. (more…)

Conan O’Brien challenges Conor McGregor in EA Sports UFC 2
EA Sports UFC 2 was released for the PS4 and Xbox One yesterday, but Conan O’Brien got to try it out last week with UFC Featherweight Champion Conor McGregor during the most recent “Clueless Gamer” segment.
EA produced a Create-A-Fighter character based on the copperheaded comedian for the segment, while McGregor played as himself. Conan got the first punch in, but even in a video game he was overmatched by a real UFC fighter. But Conan seemed to be having a blast.
Be sure to stick around until the end, as Conan absolutely towers over McGregor and it is just bizarre to see that a professional mixed martial artist is so diminutive next to the guy that pulled the “Walker, Texas Ranger Lever” all those years.

Microsoft brought more than three dozen ID@Xbox games to GDC 2016
While Microsoft took their sweet time in embracing independent development on the Xbox One, they’re certainly making up for it now with their ID@Xbox initiative. In addition to yesterday’s news that the consolemaker will be begin offering “Cross-Network Play” on some of their upcoming Xbox One and Windows 10 titles, Microsoft has confirmed that more than three-dozen games will be on display during this week’s Game Developer Conference.
If you’re unable to attend GDC this year, Microsoft has posted the complete list at the Xbox Wire, which gives us a pretty nice glimpse into the future of the ID@Xbox program.
Capy’s Below, Insmniac’s Song of the Deep, and Chair’s Shadow Complex: Remastered are just some of the titles you can try out this week at the Xbox Lobby Bar. The full list is available after the break, and hopefully Microsoft will bring at least some of these titles to next month’s PAX East expo. (more…)

Fallout 4: Automatron will be available on March 22… and here’s the first trailer
Bethesda has announced that Fallout 4‘s first downloadable expansion, Automatron, will be released for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One on March 22. They’ve even released an official trailer for the robot-wrecking adventure, and it’s been embedded above.
In the expansion, players will be able to build a variety of robot companions using hundreds of pieces and parts, all so they can do battle with the Mechanist and his army of evil robots:
In Automatron (for characters level 15 or higher), the mysterious Mechanist has unleashed a horde of evil robots into the Commonwealth, including the devious Robobrain. Hunt them down and harvest their parts to build and mod your own custom robot companions. Choose from hundreds of mods; mixing limbs, armor, abilities, and weapons such as the all-new lightning chain gun. Even customize their paint schemes and choose their voices!
Bethesda has big plans for Fallout 4’s downloadable content. Players will be able to expand their settlements this April in Wasteland Workshop. And beginning in May, the massive Far Harbor expansion will add “the largest landmass Bethesda Game Studios has ever created for post-release content” to the game.
Microsoft says Pit People will be released in 2016

As of right now, The Behemoth’s Pit People doesn’t have an official release date. However, Microsoft may have just spilled the beans in an otherwise unrelated post on the Xbox Wire from ID@Xbox Director Chris Charla. The executive used his pen to tell the world all about the great stuff Microsoft has planned for this year’s Game Developers Conference, including Cross-Network Play, the Game Preview program, and ID@Xbox games on Windows 10.
Charla also highlighted a few Xbox One titles that’ll be released this year including Cuphead, Below, Inside, Superhot, We Happy Few, Worms WMD… and Pit People.
We’ve contacted The Behemoth to find out if Pit People is really set to launch in 2016. In the meantime, we can all continue to wait patiently for the Closed Beta, which will definitely begin this Summer.
