Energy Hook swings onto Kickstarter

A few months ago we talked to Jamie Fristrom, the creator of Spider-Man 2‘s webslinging mechanic, about his next game, Energy Hook. Energy Hook takes the same cityscape grappling hook-style gameplay and adds jetpacks and a story about a futuristic sports league gone wild.

Interested?

As promised in our interview, Fristrom has launched a Kickstarter campaign for his game and he’s already surpassed his funding goal. In fact, backers have pushed the campaign to 1,608,924% of his goal so far. His goal was only $1, but that’s impressive none-the-less. Fristrom is dedicated to finishing Energy Hook and he needs your help with a variety of stretch goals that will add new features to the game. These goals include extra levels, Oculus Rift support, Linux support, and much more. If all goes well, Energy Hook should be available by March 2014.

So be sure to check out Energy Hook’s Kickstarter campaign. It looks like fun.

Weekly Warp-Up: Drawing the Battle Lines

No, that’s not a typo. Welcome to the Weekly Warp-Up, your weekly wrap-up of the biggest and the best articles posted at Warp Zoned this week…

With the clock ticking down to Microsoft’s “Next Xbox Reveal” on May 21, Sony is using Big Redmond’s radio silence to counterprogram a little PS4 news into your feed. The sneaky, sneaky Sony has marked down May 15 as the date we’ll learn more about the next Gran Turismo game. And they’re using their “Conversations With Creators” video series to tout the power of the PS4. This week, Sony enlisted two developers from Ubisoft to talk up how much better Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is on their next generation machine.

Electronic Arts isn’t interested in Sony and Microsoft’s next battle for the living room, but the publisher did confirm this week that they plan to announce at least eight games for the PS4 and/or the Xbox 720 at this year’s E3 Expo. Bethesda isn’t taking sides either (other than declaring “Nazis = Bad!”), and they revealed that the newly announced Wolfenstein: The New Order will be released this Fall for “next generation consoles,” which is code for both of them.

In non-next-gen news, we took this Summer’s Beatbuddy for a musical swim under the sea and it was adorable.

Today is the last day to buy the Twisted Pixel Bundle for 800 MS Points

twistedpixellogoThe “Twisted Pixel Games Bundle” (Comic Jumper, Splosion Man, Ms. Splosion Man, and The Maw) was added to the Xbox Live Arcade on April 12 for the low, low price of 800 Microsoft Points ($10). Purchasing all four games separately would run you $45, so it’s a fantastic deal for anyone interested in Twisted Pixel’s oeuvre. If you still haven’t picked it up, today is the last day you can get it at the discounted price.

Tomorrow, May 11, the bundle jumps to 2400 Microsoft Points ($30). That’s still a 33% discount compared to buying the games piecemeal, but its not the super, mega, awesome deal that 800 Microsoft Points is. Sadly, if you already own one or more of the games in the bundle, the purchase price won’t be adjusted accordingly.

Twisted Pixel’s next game, LocoCycle, is expected to be released for the Xbox Live Arcade this Summer.

Shadow of the Eternals uses art assets from Silicon Knights’ Eternal Darkness 2 project

shadowoftheeternals-header

Before Silicon Knights went under, it was widely known that the company was working on Eternal Darkness 2. As far as anyone knows, Nintendo never signed off on the project and Silicon Knights was developing it in hopes of getting Nintendo interested down the line.

Obviously, that never happened and a core group of developers from the company broke off and formed Precursor Games, which launched their crowdfunding campaign for Shadow of the Eternals, a “spiritual successor” to Eternal Darkness, earlier this week. But according to CEO Paul Caporicci, there’s more than just the spirit of Eternal Darkness in Shado of the Eternals visuals.

Speaking to Wired, the developer said: “We did purchase some art assets from Silicon Knights and we were very happy to be able to put those assets created by the talented past employees to use.” Caporicci would go on to say that Precursor is only using art assets from Eternal Darkness 2 and that the rest of the game completed so far has been recoded using CryEngine 3.

Shadow of the Eternals’ crowdfunding campaign is currently available through Precursor’s official website and currently sits at 8.8% funded (a little over $132,000) with 27 days left.

XBLA Today: Monaco

monaco-header

After a pair of false starts, the Xbox Live Arcade edition of Monaco is fully patched and ready for your thieving pleasure. It’s a steal at 1200 Microsoft Points ($15) and that’s the last pun I’ll use to describe the game, I promise. In fact, let’s let Pocketwatch Games take it from here:

Assemble a crack team of thieves and execute the perfect crime. Sneak, steal, and run for your lives in single player or with up to four friends in local or online co-op. Find out why it won the 2010 IGF Grand Prize and has been described by Rev3Games’ Anthony Carboni as “quite possible the best co-op ever.”

Monaco has been a favorite of the festival circuit for a few years now, and Xbox 360 owners can finally see what all the hubbub is about beginning today.
