WB executive confirms Batman: Arkham Asylum 3 will be released in 2013

batmanarkhamcitycomicTime Warner is a massive company, so it’s not surprising that their video game division, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, got short shrift during their most recently quarterly financial report. But the one bit of video game news we did get was a doozy.

John K. Martin, Time Warner’s Chief Financial Officer, confirmed that Batman: Arkham Asylum 3 is in development and will be released this year:

[W]e also have a strong games release this year, which will include the next release in the Batman Arkham franchise. So all in all, we expect Warners to post another very strong year in 2013.

Martin did not say if Rocksteady would be the team behind Arkham Asylum 3, but there’s plenty of previous rumors to fuel a little speculation on this one. That includes the possibility Arkham Asylum 3 will be set in the Silver Age or that it’ll feature a title from all those domains that WB Games registered last month.

Whatever it turns out to be, for now, we can all say, “Holy awesome announcement, Batman!”

Pokemon Scramble U set for eShop release in Japan this Spring

pokemon-header

Nintendo has announced the first Pokemon game for the Wii U and, sadly, it’s not the high definition open-world RPG everyone was hoping for. Instead, it’s a new entry in the Pokemon Scramble series of melee brawlers.

Pokemon Scramble U will include all 649 Pocket Monsters, along with a four-player multiplayer mode and the ability to display over 100 Pokemon on screen at once. That is a truly royal rumble.

Right now, the game will be available on the Japanese eShop this Spring. An American release hasn’t been announced yet, but come on, it’s Pokemon (and the first two games in the series were released in America as Pokemon Rumble and Pokemon Rumble Blast).

5 TV Shows That Should Be Games

fivetvshows-header

Gamemakers take inspiration from a variety of sources: films, books, graphic novels, and historical events have all been turned into great games. But television shows very rarely make the cut. With the recent success of Telltale Games’ The Walking Dead video game (and another one from Activision somewhat needlessly on the way), we found ourselves wondering which other current TV shows could make the transition from our airwaves to our gamepads.

It’s a rainy, dreary day here in Philadelphia, but my spirits are high! Why, you ask? Well, Ray Merkler and I just proudly announced the return of GameLoop Philly, a local self-organizing conference for game developers. Oh, and I have the day off – I spent the morning at the doctor’s office, but now I’m free to do whatever I want, which includes playing Dead Space 3. Yeah, I’m just fine with the rain.

Looking for a deal? Well, there are a few games on sale for $19.99 over at Best Buy. You can pick up the Angry Birds Trilogy, Lalaloopsy: Carnival of Friends, or The Trash Pack. Really exciting, I know!

Media Molecule is working on a mystery project

mediamolecule-header

Media Molecule, the team behind LittleBigPlanet, LittleBigPlanet 2, and the upcoming Tearaway have a second game in the works. But apparently, it’s a mystery!

The list of games on the developer’s website includes their previous titles as well as a question mark. The question mark links to the music video for “It’s A Mystery,” a minor hit for the UK band Toyah in 1981. Sadly, the lyrics aren’t much help:

It’s a mystery, oh, it’s a mystery
I’m still searching for a clue
It’s a mystery to me
A shot in the dark
The big question mark in history
Is it a mystery to you?

We’ll hopefully learn more about Media Molecule’s Question Mark during Sony’s “The Future” presentation on February 20.

Arkane Studios is working on a next-generation FPS/RPG

arkanestudios-header

Arkane Studios, the developers behind last year’s critically-acclaimed Dishonored, are working on a next-generation first person shooter/RPG hybrid. The news comes via a job listing on their Careers page:

Senior Engine Programmer
Answering to the Technical Director, you will adapt, maintain and optimize the code for PC and next gen consoles. Multipurpose, you will deal with technology issues that will come up during production (animation, IO, audio, physics….)

You know, Dishonored was a bit of an FPS/RPG hybrid. And Bethesda Vice President Pete Hines has mentioned his desire to see development begin on Dishonored 2 before. Hmm…

Weekly Warp-Up: Obsolete Used Games Edition

No, that’s not a typo. Welcome to the Weekly Warp-Up, your weekly wrap-up of the biggest and the best articles posted at Warp Zoned this week…

It’s not fit for man nor beast outside! The northeast is still digging themselves out after yesterday’s massive snowstorm, so it’s a great time to sit around and talk about rumors. Like the one that says the Xbox 720/Durango will include a Blu-ray disc drive, a used games lockout system, and an improved Kinect sensor. Putting next-generation games on Blu-ray makes total sense. As does an upgraded Kinect sensor. But there will not be a used game lockout system on any next-generation system. It is impossible. How impossible?

I repeat… Sony and Microsoft Will NOT Block Used Games in Their Next-Gen Consoles.

Warm up with even more rumors (and some actual news) after the break.
