Weekly Warp-Up: Hyper Light Edition
No, that’s not a typo. Welcome to the Weekly Warp-Up, your weekly wrap-up of the biggest and the best articles posted at Warp Zoned this week…
There’s still one more week left in Heart Machine’s pre-release beta for Hyper Light Drifter. The overhead action-adventure game will be released in early 2015, but the beta is available now to all who pre-order it and our Nicole Kline is enjoying it quite a bit. This year has been a bit lacking when it comes to groundbreaking new releases, but if Hyper Light Drifter is any indication, 2015 will more than make up for it.
In other unreleased games news, Andrew Rainnie has filed the latest entry in his Kickstart This! column examining some of the best Kickstarter campaigns to launch in the last few weeks. If you’ve got some extra coin and are looking to support an independent developer or two, do check them out.
Finally this week, Nintendo continued to prime the gaming populace for the November 21 launch of Super Smash Bros. For Wii U. In a brand new “50-Fact Extravaganza” video, the publisher has revealed that the multiplayer fighter will support 8-player brawls and confirmed that downloadable characters will be available beginning next year. And just think, there are 48 more facts where those came from!

Australian Classification Board outs US release of Attack on Titan 3DS game
Are you an Attack on Titan fan? If so, you’ll be pleased to learn that a 3DS game based on the wildly popular anime series will likely be released in America sometime soon.
According to a rating issued by the Australian Classification Board, an Attack on Titan game developed by Spike Chunsoft will soon be published in Australia by Atlus USA. It stands to reason that Atlus USA will also the game in America as well (and possibly Europe too).
The game, Attack on Titan: The Last Wings of Mankind, was originally released in Japan last December. Spike Chunsoft plans to release an updated version of the game, Attack on Titan: The Last Wings of Mankind CHAIN, in Japan this December. It’s unknown which version of the game is being localized by Atlus, though only the CHAIN edition includes online play and “online connectivity” is included in the Australian Classification Board listing.
Hopefully, Atlus makes an official announcement soon.

Insert Quarter: The History of Music Games
Insert Quarter is our showcase for some of the best and most interesting writing about video games on the Internet.
Almost 50 years ago, Paul and Art Garfunkel asked, “Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio?” in their hit song, “Mrs. Robinson.” DiMaggio would later tell Simon that he hadn’t gone anywhere, even though his playing days were long behind him. Likewise, today’s gamers have probably asked themselves, what happened to all the music games? The conventional wisdom says that they just don’t sell anymore, but who can turn down an invitation to rock out with your plastic guitar out?
IGN’s Chris Reed dug in to the history of the music from its humble roots (1996’s PaRappa the Rapper) all the way through the Guitar Here/Rock Band rivalry and into the future of the genre:
Music/rhythm games have run a surprisingly dynamic path through gaming history. Some genres drift into popularity and gradually fade out as technology and popular taste change. You might not even realize it’s happened until one day you look around and wonder, for instance, where all the 3D platformers went. Music games, on the other hand, moseyed along under the radar for the better part of a decade before taking off like a shot, attaining meteoric success before drying up nearly all at once.

Black Tusk’s Studio Manager says Gears of War 4 needs to get back to franchise’s roots
Rod Fergusson, the Studio Manager at Gears of War 4 developer Black Tusk Studios, wants to reintroduce the Gears of War franchise to its roots. The developer relayed fears that the franchise has lost its way to Phil Spencer, the head of Microsoft’s Xbox Division, who in turn discussed the future of the series with IGN on their Podcast Unlocked podcast:
The Head of Xbox told IGN that, in discussions with Rod Fergusson, who’s in charge of Gears of War at Black Tusk Studios, he’s talked about Gears of War becoming “a parody of itself” over time. “Not for any horrible reasons,” but because managing success over time is challenging.
Spencer and Fergusson have also discussed “getting back to something,” he continued. “I think [about] the story and the setting and what they’re going through as a band. Gears of War, the name really meant something to what that game was about. We need to get back to that.” He also reiterated that the next Gears of War is not a reboot.
If anyone understands the soul of the Gears of War franchise, its Fergusson. Before leaving Irrational late last year, the developer was employed by Epic and contributed to the first three Gears of War games.

Daily Scoop: October 24, 2014 – Quiet Friday
Hey there, Internet! It’s quiet here in the video game deals/video game t-shirt world today. Not that I’m complaining: I have plenty of video games and t-shirts. But I am always happy to add more to my collection of both.
There are a few games for sale at the Humble Store. You can pick up Escape Dead Island for $33.99, Forced for $4.49, and Gunpoint for $1.99.
The Daily Deal at Steam is the Eidos Anthology. It’s 34 games and DLC for $51.99, which is 75% off the full price. There’s a huge list there, and you should at least give it a glance!
I’ve got three shirts for you today…
