Chivalry: Medieval Warfare coming to PS3, Xbox 360 in 2014

Activision has announced they’ve teamed up with Torn Banner Studios and Mercenary Technology to bring Chivalry: Medieval Warfare to the PS3 and Xbox 360 by the end of the year. The first-person medieval melee game has been a hit on the PC as its sold more than two million copies since its release in 2012.

Chivalry: Medieval Warfare combines a sharp melee edge and familiar competitive gameplay along with the genuine look and feel of open-field combat in the Middle Ages. Microsoft officially purchases Minecraft maker Mojang for $2.5 billion

minecraft-header

Two Point Five Billion Dollars. That’s how much Microsoft just spent to acquire Mojang, the developer behind the wildly popular Minecraft. To put that in perspective, Disney paid $4.64 billion for Marvel in 2009 and $4.05 billion for Lucasfilm in 2012. So the Minecraft community carries the same value as 19,000 characters from the Marvel multiverse or 60% of the entire Star Wars canon. That is unbelievable.

As expected, Markus “Notch” Persson will leave Mojang after the acquisition is complete to work on new projects. And, in a surprising move, Microsoft has confirmed that Minecraft will not become a PC/Xbox exclusive. The game will continue to be available on mobile devices, the PS3, the PS4, and the Vita.

“Minecraft is one of the most popular franchises of all time,” said Phil Spencer, head of Xbox. “We are going to maintain Minecraft and its community in all the ways people love today, with a commitment to nurture and grow it long into the future.”

To date, more than 50 million copies of Minecraft have been sold across all platforms, making it one of the best-selling games of all time.

Debut trailer of Resident Evil Revelations 2 promises episodic release… and zombies

Resident Evil Revelations 2 was announced less than two weeks ago, but Capcom has already penciled it in for an early 2015 release. How does the publisher plan to pull that off? By releasing the game episodically over the course of a month.

The game will be split into four episodes (priced at $5.99 each) that will released on a weekly basis. However, fans who purchase the “Complete Season” bundle (priced at $24.99) will receive bonus game content not included in the weekly episodes. And for those who are content to wait, a retail disc version (priced at $39.99) will include even more bonus game content. So the only way to get the complete story out of this episodic game to wait for the disc-based compilation.

But what kind of game can players expect? Well, a post on the Capcom-Unity blog has revealed that Claire Redfield will team up with Moira Burton to explore a seemingly abandoned facility after both are kidnapped:

It’s been quite a few years since we’ve seen Claire Redfield in her own adventure, but early next year she she’ll face all-new dangers and dread in Resident Evil Revelations 2. As some fans may already know, since the Code: Veronica days she’s joined the anti-bioterror organization Terra Save, helping people around the world deal with ongoing bio threats. Revelations 2 begins with Claire welcoming Moira Burton – daughter of Barry! – into Terra Save, but in true RE fashion it’s not long before trouble finds our heroes.

The party is crashed, Claire and Moira are knocked unconscious and taken to a mysterious detention center located on an island. They soon encounter demented, writhing enemies called Afflicted roaming the halls of this abandoned facility, and have to team up to survive. The real question is, who brought them here? And… why?

Resident Evil Revelations 2 will be released for the PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One in early 2015.

Super Smash Bros. For Wii U includes 3DS controller option, may be released in November

supersmashbros4-working-header

There’s a very good chance that Super Smash Bros. For Wii U will be released in November. And it’s not just because November is the only part of 2014 that can reasonably be considered part of the holiday shopping season (December doesn’t count because publishers routinely avoid the month altogether).

GameSpot is reporting that west coast retailer Fred Meyer is selling reservation cards advertising a November 21 release for Smash Bros. Wii U. It’s possible this is just a placeholder date, but as I said, it’s a logical time to launch Smash Bros. Wii U and it’s also a week before Black Friday… which makes it even more logical. That also gives Super Smash Bros. For 3DS a six-week window to breathe after its October 3 release date.

And speaking of the 3DS, in a separate report, GameSpot has confirmed that players will be able to use their 3DS handheld as a controller in Super Smash Bros. For Wii U. Smash Bros. Wii U already supports the Wii U GamePad, the Wii U Pro Controller, the Wii Remote/Nunchuk combo, and the GameCube controller (with a special adapter), so I’m not sure if there’s anybody out there lamenting the fact they couldn’t use their 3DS system as a controller before. That said, this news will make multiplayer matches look that much crazier.

No, that’s not a typo. Welcome to the Weekly Warp-Up, your weekly wrap-up of the biggest and the best articles posted at Warp Zoned this week…

Microsoft and Nintendo spent this week getting ready for the holiday season by announcing a ton of new system bundles. Microsoft revealed that the Walmart-exclusive version of the 2014 Holiday Bundle would include a blue Xbox 360 console (and copies of Call of Duty: Black Ops II and Call of Duty: Ghosts). But Nintendo went one further by announcing a trio of new 3DS XL bundles including designs based on the classic NES controller, Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth, and Super Smash Bros. For 3DS.

Next up, Dan Hobbs has posted a review of Metro Redux for your reading pleasure.

Oh, and in other news, Microsoft may be buying Mojang (creators of Minecraft) and Apple announced the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, and the Apple Watch. Maybe I should have lead with those.

Mega Man 7 is now available on the Wii U eShop

Nintendo’s Treehouse branch has been running a livestream of some of their upcoming games all day, but there’s been a few surprises as well. For example, did you hear that Mega Man 7 is now available to download through the Wii U eShop?

Priced at $7.99, the addition of the (relatively) obscure Super NES title means that the first seven games in the classic Mega Man series are now playable on the Wii U. Mega Man X and Mega Man X2 can also be found on the eShop (and are currently on sale to boot).

If you want to catch up with all the action, tune in to the livestream now, they’re still going until 11:00 PM (Eastern Time).
