Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor leads the pack with 5 nominations at 2015 GDC Awards

gdcawardsThe nominees for this year’s Game Developers Choice Awards have been announced and, unsurprisingly, Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor leads the way with five nominations, including “Game of the Year.”

Shadow of Mordor will compete for the top prize with other four multi-category nominees including Alien: Isolation, Bayonetta 2, Destiny, and Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft. Believe it or not, the next-most-nominated game, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, was actually shut out of the “Game of the Year” category. The Astronauts’ mystery title was nominated for “Best Narrative,” “Best Audio,” the “Innovation Award,” and “Best Debut.”

Alien: Isolation (“Best Visual Art” and “Best Audio”), Destiny (“Best Audio” and “Best Technology”), and Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft (“Best Design” and “Best Handheld/Mobile Game”) are each up for two additional awards while Bayonetta 2 is also up for “Best Visual Art.”

A complete list of the nominees for this year’s Game Developers Choice Awards can be found after the break. And be sure to check back for a look at the winners, which will be announced on March 4 during the Game Developers Conference.

Nintendo Download: Bayonetta 1 + 2, Just Dance 2015, Fantasy Life, more

bayonettaI think this may be one of the biggest weeks ever for Nintendo’s eShop… and it’s actually almost all due to Nintendo themselves. The consolemaker will release four games tomorrow: Platinum’s action sequel Bayonetta 2, the original Bayonetta, the RPG/life simulation mashup Fantasy Life, and the drawing game Pokemon Art Academy.

But this week will also see the release of…

  • Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse (3DS), the latest game in WayForward’s beloved platformer series (and another “Nindie” backed by Nintendo).
  • KORG DSN-12 (3DS), the latest game in the music synthesizer series.
  • Just Dance 2015 (Wii U), the newest game in Ubisoft’s dancing franchise.
  • Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow (Wii U), one of the best Castlevania games to ever grace the Game Boy Advance.
  • The Legend of Korra: A New Era Begins (3DS), a strategy game based on the popular animated series.
  • Big Hero 6: Battle in the Bay (3DS), an action that takes place after the upcoming Disney film.

More details on all of these games (and a few others) can be found after the break. (more…)

New Releases: Bayonetta 2, Civilization: Beyond Earth, Just Dance 2015, More

newreleases102114

The third phase of Nintendo’s attempt to dominate the Fall gaming season arrives this week in the form of Bayonetta 2 for the Wii U. Platinum’s stylish witch has been given a second life by The Big N and the developer returned the favor by packaging the original Bayonetta with the sequel. Nintendo will also release a pair of smaller 3DS titles this week: Fantasy Life, an RPG/life simulation hybrid, and Pokemon Art Academy, a drawing game starring Pikachu.

Also available this week is the futuristic Civilization: Beyond Earth for the PC. Firaxis designed the game as a spiritual successor to the popular Alpha Centauri, which is something fans of the franchise have been asking for for a long time.

Speaking of franchises we haven’t seen in a long time… Ubisoft will bring Just Dance 2015 to the PS3, PS4, Wii, Wii U, Xbox 360, and Xbox One this week. That “long time” comment was a joke, by the way. What’s not a joke is the return of Harmonix, who are back with a new music game of their own, the Disney-inspired Fantasia: Music Evolved for the Xbox One and Xbox 360.

Finally this week, Telltale Games will release The Walking Dead Season 2 for the PS4 and Xbox One. Get your cleaning cloth ready, those tear-stained controllers won’t clean themselves.

A complete list of this week’s new releases can be found after the break. (more…)

Nintendo Download: Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures 2, Bayonetta 2 demo, more

bayonettaThere’s more Castlevania coming to the Wii U Virtual Console today as Nintendo has added Castlevania: Circle of the Moon to their online storefront. The Game Boy Advance classic, one of the best available during the handheld’s launch period, sidesteps the Belmont clan to tell the story of vampire hunter Nathan Graves.

Another demon hunter takes up residence on the Wii U eShop today ahead of her full debut on October 24. That’s when Platinum Games will unleash Bayonetta 2 on unsuspecting Wii U owners. But they can give the game an early look today thanks to a new downloadable demo.

Most of this week’s eShop releases will be available to download on Tuesday, including Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures 2. The latest game based on the Saturday morning cartoon will be released for the 3DS and Wii U on October 14.

More details on all of these games (and a few other new releases) can be found after the break. (more…)

See Bayonetta cosplay as Nintendo characters in new Bayonetta 2 trailer

Have you ever wanted to see Bayonetta dress up as Star Fox, Link, Samus Aran, or Princess Peach? Well, you’ll get your chance in Bayonetta 2. The trailer embedded above showcases the wicked witch’s new looks as well as the special attacks that come bundled with her new outfits. Donning Link’s green tunic allows Bayonetta to wield a mighty bow and slipping into Samus Aran’s Varia Suit opens up the Screw Attack as well as the Morph Ball. Despite what the trailer says, these costume changes aren’t mere “cosplay.”

Bayonetta 2 (which will be bundled with the original Bayonetta) will be available exclusively for the Wii U on October 24.
