Tecmo Koei at E3 2013: Dynasty Warriors 8, Dead or Alive 5, Ninja Gaiden Z, more

tecmokoei-logoTecmo Koei is bringing a quintet of games to this year’s E3 Expo and their lineup should look quite familiar to anyone who knows the company well.

Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z, the next game in the Ninja Gaiden series (and the first not to star Ryu Hayabusa), leads off their lineup. A newly announced “early 2014” release date accompanies its E3 appearance.

New entries in two other long-running franchises, Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate and Dynasty Warriors 8, will also be included at Tecmo Koei’s E3 booth.

Finally, two Vita games: Atelier Meruru Plus: The Apprentice of Arland, an RPG re-release, and Toukiden, a new game from the Dynasty Warriors development team, will also be on hand.

More details about all of these titles, straight from Tecmo Koei, can be found after the break. (more…)

Sonic: Lost World gameplay trailer rushes its way online

IGN has posted the first trailer for Sonic: Lost World, the Nintendo-exclusive next entry in the Sonic the Hedgehog series.

The trailer introduces “The Deadly Six,” a monstrous group of… well, monsters… that have begun to threaten Sonic’s animal friends. Naturally, the blue speedster has strapped on his red sneakers and is going to do his best to defend them. The video also reveals a few glimpses of gameplay footage, and Sonic: Lost World appears to be a mix of behind-the-back play and side-scrolling sections.

Sonic: Lost World is looking pretty good so far, and it will be available for the 3DS and Wii U later this year.

Super Mario Bros. movie gets semi-official webcomic sequel after 20 years

supermariobros2-webcomic

Steven Applebaum and Ryan Hoss really love the Super Mario Bros. movie. The pair has run Super Mario Bros.: The Movie Archive since 2007 and they held a special 20th anniversary screening of the film this past weekend at the Nuart Theatre in Los Angeles. They even managed to convince John Leguizamo (he played Luigi) to deliver a recorded message to fans. But what they plan to do next tops even that.

Do you remember the final scene of the movie? Of course you do… Princess Daisy rushes in with a big gun requesting the Mario Brothers’ help for another big adventure! Applebaum and Hoss certainly remember and they’ve recruited the movie’s original screenwriter, Parker Bennett, to help them flesh out where the story would have went next. And it’ll all be published as a multi-part webcomic… Super Mario Bros. 2!

The first chapter, “Return to Dinohattan,” is available now. Which has to be proof that nothing’s impossible. Improbable… unlikely… but never impossible.

TT Games adds Venom, Human Torch to Lego Marvel Super Heroes

venom-legoWhen WB Games first announced Lego Marvel Super Heroes, they confirmed that the game would include over 100 playable characters. So far, that list includes big names like Spider-Man, Iron Man, Wolverine, Captain America, The Hulk, Thor, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Nick Fury, and Deadpool. But two more were added to the game’s roster this weekend at the London MCM Expo.

According to a tweet from TT Games’ Joe Moore, Venom and the Human Torch will both be playable in Lego Marvel Super Heroes. With (at least) 88 more names to come, we can probably expect more of these announcements between now and the game’s release this fall on the 3DS, DS, PC, PS3, Vita, Wii U, and Xbox 360.

I’m holding out hope for Lego Blade myself.

Weekly Warp-Up: Say Hello to the Xbox One

No, that’s not a typo. Welcome to the Weekly Warp-Up, your weekly wrap-up of the biggest and the best articles posted at Warp Zoned this week…

Microsoft lifted the curtain on their next generation console, the Xbox One, this week. More than a mere console, the system will be bundled with a new Kinect sensor and take over your cable box. A hefty feature set will allow multiple apps to run the background in something called “Snap Mode.” And like the PS4’s Share Button, the Xbox One will be equipped with a “Game DVR.”

But what about games? Microsoft mostly stayed quiet about the system’s game content (preferring to announce them at E3), but they did reveal a bunch of new titles from EA Sports (FIFA 14, Madden NFL 25, NBA Live 14, EA Sports UFC), Forza Motorsport 5 from Turn 10, Quantum Break from Remedy, and Call of Duty: Ghosts. All together, Microsoft plans to release 15 Xbox One-exclusive games in the system’s first year as well as Halo: The Television Series.

But then the problems began. It soon came to light that the Xbox One won’t be backwards compatible with Xbox 360 and Xbox Live Arcade games. And it turned out that used games will be heavily regulated thanks to a requirement that all games must be installed to the hard drive. To top it all off, Microsoft expects the Xbox One, PS4, and Wii U combined to sell ONE BILLION consoles. That’s just insane and makes us wonder if the Xbox 360 was just a fluke. Actually, we think this comic sums it up quite well.

Of course, Microsoft can still bounce back. And we expect them to. In fact, all three console manufacturers can have a great E3 Expo (and beyond). We explain how in our look at The Roadmap To Victory for Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony at E3 2013.

And on a totally unrelated note, we offer suggestions on “How To Get More Coin For Your Game Project” in the latest edition of Kickstart This!

You can find more news from the week after the break. (more…)
