stasis-header

In the November edition of our Kickstart This! column, we briefly looked at the dark sci-fi world of Stasis, an isometric adventure game from Johannesburg-based game developer Christopher Bischoff. I recently chatted with the designer to delve further into the belly of the deserted spacecraft named Groomlake, along with old LucasArts titles, South African gaming, and an unheard-of cinematic gem from William Shatner. Interview: The Harrowing Inspiration Behind Matt Gilgenbach’s Neverending Nightmares

neverendingnightmares-header

In the recent Sweet September Edition of our regular Kickstart This! feature, we highlighted the pencil-drawn psychological horror adventure Neverending Nightmares. The story behind the game’s development is incredible, and even more heartfelt.

Matt Gilgenbach, the creative mastermind behind the game, is well known for developing the reverse 2D space shooter Retro/Grade. Although it was lauded by critics, the game was a commercial disaster. Its lack of sales pushed Gilgenbach into a state of severe depression, which was also coupled with his on-going battle with OCD. After a couple of years, Gilgenbach managed to take inspiration from his mental disorders and transform them into Neverending Nightmares, a semi-autobiographical tale of horror. I caught up with Gilgenbach to find out more about what has driven him to make such a unique and personal game. (more…)

Hidden amongst the big games announced during Nintendo’s E3 2013 Nintendo Direct video presentation were some gorgeous looking indie titles. One that really shone bright during its brief showing was Scram Kitty and His Buddy On Rails, a top-down, on-rails (but not in that way) shooter/platformer hybrid. It is currently being developed by Welsh studio Dakko Dakko, best known for their previous PSN Mini hit Floating Cloud God Saves the Pilgrims. Scram Kitty’s Producer, Dan Croucher, was kind enough to answer some questions about tax breaks, octopus hats, and favourite gaming titles. (more…)

DARE To Read This Interview With the Co-Creator of Don’t Play With Drugs: The Game

dontplaywithdrugs-logoA few months ago, I got my hands on a terrific card game called Don’t Play With Drugs. It’s frenetic, fun, and fast – you can play a game in five minutes, meaning you can either play a marathon of it, play quick rounds of it in between setting up other board games, or even play it while your Dungeon Master is off taking a break. Right After Then, the company behind the game, did a limited run earlier this year, but fear not – they have a Kickstarter running now, which you should absolutely back. I caught up with the one of the co-creators, Jordan Martin, and asked him a few questions about the game, the Kickstarter, and what else they have in the works. (more…)
