Game Critics Awards panel declares Fallout 4 the “Best of Show” at E3 2015

fallout4-header

The Game Critics Awards, a panel comprised of journalists from 38 different publications, have handed out their 2015 “Best of E3” honors and Bethesda’s Fallout 4 took home the big prize… which should come as a surprise to pretty much no one. In addition to being named “Best of Show,” Fallout 4 was also awarded “Best PC Game” and “Best Role Playing Game.”

However, Fallout 4 couldn’t win all the awards, and its quantity was actually matched by Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, which collected three awards of its own. Among the traditional awards, Nathan Drake’s next adventure won “Best Console Game” and “Best Action/Adventure Game.” But it was also selected for a “Special Commendation For Graphics” award by the Game Critics Awards panel.

Star Wars: Battlefront was the only other multi-award winner, taking home “Best Action Game” and “Best Online Multiplayer.” More interestingly, this year’s Best of E3 awards included two repeat winners… Super Mario Maker for “Best Family/Social Game” and No Man’s Sky for “Best Independent Game.”

A full list of this year’s winners can be found after the break. (more…)

Mighty No. 9 live-action adaptation will be a feature-length film

mightynonine-header

Over a year after it was first confirmed, Legendary Digital Media, Contradiction Films, and video game developer Comcept announced today that Kickstarter success Mighty No. 9 will be getting its own live-action adaptation. The feature-kength film will be released on “digital platforms,” with no word on a theatrical or physical release.

The Keiji Inafune-developed vehicle already has a cartoon series in the works slated for 2016. In the past, Inafune has spoken at length about how he wants the game to be turned into a multimedia mega-franchise with “comic book, manga, anime, movie, TV drama series” and more.

This is the second time Inafune has worked with Legendary Digital and Contradiction, the first coming in the form of Dead Rising: Watchtower, a mediocre film based on Inafune’s Dead Rising series.

For a game that hasn’t been released yet, the creators and investors of Mighty No. 9 seem to have high expectations for it. Inafune recently launched a pair of Kickstarter campaigns for Red Ash, a Mighty No. 9 spinoff franchise that will include a third-person action game and a companion anime short.

Inafune is certainly promising a lot before he’s delivered anything. Mighty No. 9 will be released on September 15 (and it’ll be playable at this weekend’s San Diego Comic-Con), but his creator has already seemingly moved on to a feature film, a cartoon series, and two other crowdfunding campaigns. That’s a lot for any developer.

Indiependence Day non-sale asks gamers to pay full price for indie games

indiependenceday

It’s no secret that independent developers often have to struggle to make ends meat, especially in this world of deep discount Steam sales and bundles (both Humble and not). Cue the “Indiependence Day” movement. Today, a number of indie developers have banded together to not put their games on sale. Instead, they’re asking gamers to pay full price on this 4th of July (and to spread the word with the #IndiependenceDay hashtag):

We encourage fans of indie games to support their favorite developers by buying their games at full price. If you bought a game on sale and wound up really loving it, perhaps buy a copy at full price and gift it to a friend. Or pick up that game that’s been on your wishlist for a long time. (Steam’s new refund policy makes that a lot less risky!) Whatever your platform of choice, we’d love your support.

Dozens of games are included in the Indiependence Day including a few Warp Zoned favorites, such as Tom Happ’s side-scrolling Axiom Verge, Dejobaan’s wordy adventure Elegy For A Dead World, and Vertex Pop’s twin-stick shooter We Are Doomed.

A complete list of participating developers can be found after the break. (more…)

Donkey Kong and Bowser take center stage in this Skylanders SuperChargers trailer

Activision has released a new trailer for Skylanders SuperChargers that focuses on the game’s Nintendo-exclusive guest stars… “Turbo Charge Donkey Kong” and “Hammer Slam Bowser.”

Naturally, both characters will only be playable in Skylanders SuperChargers for the Wii U, Wii, and 3DS. However, that won’t stop Activision from releasing a Skylanders figure for both characters, which will be available exclusively in the game’s 3DS and Wii U Starter Packs. Bowser will be packaged with the 3DS version, while Donkey Kong will share a barrel with the Wii U version. Each figure will also include Amiibo functionality, as Nintendo has endorsed both figures (a switch on the bottom toggles the figure between Skylanders and Amiibo).

Skylanders SuperChargers will be released on September 20, and it’ll also be available for the iPad, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.

Nintendo Download: Zelda Ocarina of Time, Samurai Warriors Chronicles 3, more

legendofzeldaOne of the greatest games of all time, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, is now available to download for the Wii U through Nintendo’s Virtual Console program. The Nintendo 64 game was Link’s first foray into a 3D world and has influenced nearly every Zelda game to follow in its footsteps.

Also available for the Wii U this week is Roving Rogue, a side-scrolling platformer that takes place in a giant castle. Sitting next to Ocarina of Time, it’s amazing how far gaming has come while still looking back at the classic setups of the 70s and 80s.

Finally this week, Koei Tecmo has released Samurai Warriors Chronicles 3 for the 3DS. The handheld game “incorporates the best features from previous Samurai Warriors games” and features the big battles that the franchise is known for.

More information on all of these titles (and a few others) can be found after the break. (more…)

Indiana Jones, Darkwing Duck, and others could be added to Disney Infinity in the future

disneyinfinity-header

Disney Infinity was released to fairly universal acclaim in 2013, but gamers everywhere hoped the Mouse House would add Marvel characters to the mix in a sequel. Disney listened to their requests, and released Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes a year later. This same cycle of fan feedback eventually led Disney Interactive to begin production on Disney Infinity: Star Wars, which will be released sometime in the Fall.

But what other characters from the Disney Vault will eventually make their way into a future Disney Infinity game? How about… all of them?

Disney Interactive’s John Blackburn and John Vignocchi recently spoke to Polygon about the franchise, revealing that every character from Disney’s vast empire has the chance to be added to a future Disney Infinity project. They couldn’t make any promises on which characters might make a future appearance, but Lucasfilm’s Ada Duan said that Howard the Duck has been asked for by a lot of fans. Other characters name-dropped by the trio include Indiana Jones, Darkwing Duck, and LucasArts’s stable of adventure games (especially Secret of Monkey Island and Day of the Tentacle).

Though it might be a while before any of these characters make it into Disney Infinity, as Duan said the company is “looking forward” towards new content. That’s disappointing, but the full interview at Polygon is still a riot, so be sure to read the whole thing.
