The Walking Dead Season 2: In Harm’s Way Review: Villainous

Playing through the first season of Telltale’s The Walking Dead game, it became quickly apparent that danger was everywhere. I always had to be on my guard, watching my back, and stepping on eggshells. Normally menial tasks such as searching through an abandoned pharmacy or walking across a parking lot had become frightening life-or-death battles for survival. Knock a bottle off a counter or make a wrong turn, and you’ll almost certainly meet a ghastly end. If you wanted to survive, you had to avoid walkers at all costs, as these were truly terrifying enemies.
But while still a constant threat, the zombies in The Walking Dead weren’t much more than obstacles – dangerous obstacles, mind you – but a hindrance nonetheless. You knew what you had to do to survive the mindless ghouls. All that changed in The Walking Dead Season 2, where we were introduced to Carver, one of the most fascinating characters in the series. You hated him, but at the same time you understood his plight. He was trying to bring his group together no matter what. While at first we don’t think he’s all that bad, he dispels those thoughts, and quickly becomes one of the greatest villains in the Walking Dead universe. It’s because of this character that In Harm’s Way is not only the best episode of this second season, but perhaps the best episode of the entire series. (more…)
XBL Store Today: Sniper Elite III, Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition

Today’s additions to the Xbox Live Game Store should look very familiar to anyone who checked in with this week’s PlayStation Store update yesterday.
First up is Sniper Elite III, the World War II sniper simulation that is set in Africa during the heart of the war. Also new this week is Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition, a side-scrolling platformer that features a Mexican luchador and his quest to save his beloved.
Both games are available for the Xbox One and the Xbox 360. And you can more information on both after the break. (more…)

Lindsay Lohan actually sues Rockstar over supposed similarity to GTA5 character
Back in December, TMZ learned that Lindsay Lohan was threatening to sue Rockstar Games over her supposed likeness to one of Grand Theft Auto V‘s female characters. Today, Lohan made good on her threat and filed a lawsuit against the game developer in New York County Civil Court.
According to the Associated Press, Lohan is claiming that Rockstar created the character of Lacey Jonas using her image and voice, specifically citing “styles from her clothing line.” Jonas’ page on the GTA Wiki shows that she is an extremely minor character and beyond her career (actress) and relationship with the paparazzi (she doesn’t like them), she doesn’t appear to share any traits with Lohan.
Lohan also believes that a Chateau Marmont-like apartment building was included in the game because she once lived there. Now, I’m no law-talking guy, but I don’t think Lindsay Lohan can demand to exclude a building that kinda-sorta resembles one she used to live in from a video game.
Grand Theft Auto V was released for the PS3 and Xbox 360 last September and a PC, PS4, and Xbox One release is planned for this Fall. Lohan is likely looking for a big payday as the game generated more than $800 million in sales on its first day of availability on its way to becoming the best-selling game of 2013.
Evolve, No Man’s Sky dominate Best of E3 2014 Game Critics Awards

Two of the most buzzed-about games going into the 2014 E3 Expo were Turtle Rock’s Evolve and Hello Games’s No Man’s Sky. Not surprisingly, both games cleaned up in this year’s Best of E3 2014 Game Critics Awards.
Evolve tallied four wins including “Best of Show,” “Best Console Game,” “Best Action Game,” and “Best Online Multiplayer.” No Man’s Sky traded on its unique reputation while on its way to winning “Best Original Game” and “Best Independent Game” as well as a “Special Commendation For Innovation.”
No other game was honored in multiple categories though Super Smash Bros. For 3DS was selected as “Best Handheld/Mobile Game” and Super Smash Bros. For Wii U took home “Best Fighting Game.”
A complete list of this year’s winners can be found after the break. (more…)
Third-person spinoff Escape Dead Island will be available this Fall
Deep Silver is expanding the Dead Island universe again with the announcement of Escape Dead Island, a third-person action game that promises to reveal the origins of the zombie outbreak:
Escape Dead Island is a survival mystery that follows the story of Cliff Calo, who sets sail to document the unexplained events rumored to have happened on Banoi. Arriving on the island of Narapela, part of the Banoi archipelago, he finds that not everything is as it seems. Haunted by deja vu, Cliff will have to make sense of it all throughout the entire game – again and again. This story-driven adventure lets players delve into the Dead Island universe and unravel the origins of the zombie outbreak. Escape is only the beginning…
Melee combat will still be a big part of Escape Dead Island, but players will also have to fight for their sanity as Cliff suffers from delusions represented by “unique visual styles” when he is experiencing a break with reality. The debut trailer above gives us a taste of these delusions by depicting one of Cliff’s attacks with black-and-white flashes. If this sounds similar to a beloved GameCube game from 2002, that’s by design. Deep Silver’s Community Manager, Maurice Tan, wrote on Twitter that he sees “a bit of Eternal Darkness” in Escape Dead Island.
Escape Dead Island is in development at Fatshark and will serve as a bridge between Dead Island and Dead Island 2. It will be released this Fall for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.

You can see John Cena on the cover of WWE 2K15 this October
2K Games and the WWE have announced that John Cena will appear on the cover of the upcoming WWE 2K15 (cue the groans from wrestling fans who can’t stand Cena).
Cena starred in a promotional video to help with the announcement and the wrestler revealed that he’ll be working closely with 2K to “put my own little touches on the game.” We don’t yet know what those “little touches” are, but hopefully we’ll find out soon. You can watch the video for yourself after the break.
WWE 2K15 is in development at Yukes and Visual Concepts and will be released for the PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One on October 28. (more…)
Kickstart This! It’s Just Not Cricket Edition

That’s right, it’s time for football (or soccer, for the average American reader and editor). World Cup fever has landed and is now in full swing like the Rio Carnival. It has been a tournament of surprises, with the current World Cup champions knocked out by the second game, along with perennial contenders England (but I’m Scottish, so the less said about Luis Suarez’s two beautiful goals, the better).
There are a number of great Kickstarter campaigns in full force as well, and instead of placing bets on goals scored or corners won, perhaps think about donating some of that cash to these fine projects. We have the amazingly named Catlateral Damage, top-down 2D action-adventure Midora, and 2D puzzle-platformer For My Brother. On top of that, there is also a side-scrolling space shooter known as Temporus, the stealth ninja mastery of Twin Souls, and the 8-bit existential journey of Glitch.
Let’s go for the goal! (more…)

Keiji Inafune and his team at Comcept have released a new gameplay trailer for Mighty No. 9, their spiritual successor to Inafune’s world famous Mega Man series.
Today’s trailer is an update to Mighty No. 9’s May trailer in that it once again focuses on the industrial locale that Mighty No. 5 calls home and the icy domain of Mighty No. 2. Go Mighty go!
Thanks to its hugely successful Kickstarter campaign, Comcept will release Mighty No. 9 for the 3DS, PC (Windows, Mac, Linux), PS3, PS4, Vita, Wii U, Xbox 360, and Xbox One in Spring 2015.
