The 2016 Game Awards are just a few days away, and in addition to crowning this year’s “Game of the Year,” host Geoff Keighley will also introduce a handful of World Premiere trailers featuring some of 2017’s biggest games.

Yesterday, we learned the names of two more games that’ll get a few minutes in the spotlight courtesy of the awards show… Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and 2K’s Prey:

The 2016 Game Awards will kick off at 8:30 PM (Eastern Time) on Thursday, December 1. Keighley has promised the night will be full of surprises and the host previously confirmed that BioWare will also take the stage this year to debut the first gameplay footage from Mass Effect: Andromeda.

New Prey trailer introduces us to “Another Morgan Yu”

Bethesda and Arkane Austin recently released a new trailer for Prey, but it may look familiar to fans who previously viewed the QuakeCon 2016 trailer. But there’s a good reason for that.

Prey gives players the option to choose the main character’s gender, and while previous trailers depicted Morgan Yu as a man, this new trailer offers a glimpse at what the game will sound like if Morgan is a woman.

Prey takes place on a space station that has been overrun by a hostile alien life force, and it’ll be available next year for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

Bethesda delivers another look at Prey at QuakeCon 2016

With no connection to the original game, or the previously-announced Prey 2, I’m still a bit baffled as to why Bethesda chose to resurrect the franchise’s name for the upcoming first-person game now known as Prey. But resurrect it they did, and the publisher even had a new gameplay trailer on display during this weekend’s QuakeCon convention.

Developed by Arkane Studios, the trailer reintroduced fans to Morgan Yu and gave them their first look at life aboard the Talos I space station. Those who made the trip to Dallas were also treated to an extended (and exclusive) gameplay demo that focused on the different types of aliens Morgan will encounter, as well as the extraterrestrial powers and weapons he’ll be able to wield.

Thankfully, Bethesda.net was able to get Co-Creative Director Raphael Colantonio and Lead Designer Ricardo Bare to open up a bit about what’s in store for players of Prey:

Typhon are roaming the halls of Talos I, hunting down the remaining humans. How you choose to deal with these creatures is up to you. You can take a stealthier route, finding secret paths around the station while using your tools and abilities to avoid confrontation. The station itself is a completely contiguous world. The entirety of Talos I is open to you immediately… provided you can find a way to get there.

Whatever path you forge, you’ll face different dangers at every turn. One of the keys to survival are the neuromods you’ll find scattered around the station, as they allow you to enhance yourself with alien-based powers.

Prey will be released for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One in 2017.

Prey 2 is in development at Arkane Austin as a completely new game

The Prey franchise lives… but we are a long way from the original live-action trailer for Prey 2. But I suppose there’s a reason for that, as development on Prey 2 has completely shifted to Arkane Studios in Austin and they’ve decided to drop the numeral. So get ready for a second helping of Prey.

This time around, the action takes place in 2032 aboard the Talos 1, a deep space exploration vessel. But unfortunately, humanity isn’t in charge of the station and malevolent aliens have taken over in a bid to find out what makes us tick (just like the Strangers in Dark City). Thankfully, Morgan Yu is ready to fight back:

You are Morgan Yu, the subject of morally dubious experiments designed to improve the human race. You awaken aboard the Talos 1 in the year 2032 and must uncover the secrets hiding in the depths of the space station while being hunted by the mysterious alien force that has taken over. You’ll have to rely on the tools you find on the station – along with your wits, weapons, and mind-bending abilities – to combat the growing threat and, hopefully, survive.

Prey will be released for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One sometime next year.

Arkane Studios is likely working on Prey 2… for real this time

prey-2-sBack in May, it was reported that Bethesda had taken Prey 2 away from Human Head and handed it off to Arkane’s Austin studio. The rumor stated that Arkane was being given free reign to throw out the entirety of Human Head’s work and start over. The new project, which may still carry the “Prey 2” name, was said to resemble System Shock.

As is their habit, Bethesda denied these rumors. But a new report on Kotaku purports to show a leaked email from the company confirming Arkane’s involvement and the cancellation of Human Head’s version of Prey 2.

In light of this new information, rather than issue another denial, Bethesda declined to comment:

When reached by Kotaku for comment today, Bethesda sent over a statement: “We aren’t talking about what Arkane is working on and we have no new information to share on Prey 2.”

Why are they being so vague? Why mislead the public like this? Maybe there are legal issues involved here—the relationship between Bethesda and Human Head is still very bizarre—but it’s an unusual and unfortunate situation.

It may be a long time before we hear anything new about Prey 2, but we’ll let you know when we do.

Rumor: Dishonored developer Arkane takes over Prey 2

arkanestudios-header

Prey 2 has bounced around from developer to developer for years now, but it looks like the long-delayed sequel may have finally found a permanent home at Arkane Studios. And there’s a chance it’s no longer known as “Prey 2.”

Kotaku is reporting (along with an assist from Prey 2 fan site Alien Noire) that Prey 2 has found a new home at the Dishonored developer’s Austin studio. Their tipster also revealed that Bethesda has instructed them to throw out the entirety of Human Head’s work and start from scratch, or, “just treat it like a new System Shock.” The original design for Prey 2 already differed wildly from Prey, trading in the original’s alien spaceship (complete with kidnapped humans) for a wild west-like alien planet where humans live freely.

Arkane is actually the third studio to get their hands on Prey 2. Previously, Bethesda offered the game to Obsidian, who worked on it for a few months. According to Kotaku’s source, the team isn’t happy that their parent company is forcing them to work on someone else’s game, but the fresh start will allow them to put their own stamp on it.

This developer switch will cause another delay for Prey 2 and, according to Kotaku, it’s unlikely that the game will be released before 2016.
