Weekly Warp-Up: Something Something Wii U Edition

No, that’s not a typo. Welcome to the Weekly Warp-Up, your weekly wrap-up of the biggest and the best articles posted at Warp Zoned this week…

Now that the Wii U has launched, analysts are extra concerned about the health of the console game industry. Spoiler alert: They think it sucks and is in trouble. Thankfully, we don’t stand for that kind of fearmongering and want everyone to “Just Stop!” Consoles Are NOT Headed For a Crash.

Want more proof? How about the fact that Nintendo sold 400,000 Wii U consoles in its first week of availability. But I guess somebody forgot to tell Atari founder Nolan Bushnell, who is completely baffled by the Wii U.

We also explored “The Music of Sonic the Hedgehog” in a non-Wii U-related moment that we like to call the Speed of Sound.

More of this week’s news can be found after the break.

New Releases: Far Cry 3, Mass Effect Trilogy, Resistance Collection, More

The month of December is typically a slow one for new game releases, but that hasn’t stopped Ubisoft from bringing Far Cry 3 to the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 this week.

This week will also see the release of the Lord of the Rings-inspired MOBDA Guardians of Middle-Earth. The game will make its debut on the PlayStation Store and Xbox Live Arcade, but a boxed PS3 copy will also be available.

If you’d prefer something a bit more substantial, two trilogies will be available on the PS3 for the first time: BioWare’s Mass Effect Trilogy and Insomniac’s Resistance Collection.

Also available this week is a quartet of multiplatform games making their Wii U debut: Rise of the Guardians, Cabela’s Dangerous Hunts 2013, Rapala Pro Bass Fishing, and The Avengers: Battle For Earth.

Finally, gamers can check out Power Rangers Super Samurai for the Xbox 360 and Family Party 30 Great Games: Obstacle Arcade for the Wii U this week.

Daily Scoop: November 30, 2012 – What were you thankful for?

It’s the last day of November, and if you’re on Facebook or Twitter, you probably saw a lot of posts about what people were grateful for every day. I enjoyed reading everything my friends had to say, and at times even felt a little wistful. What were you the most grateful for, this final month on Earth before the world ends? I know I was grateful for family, friends, my kitties, video games, writing, and the love of my life, Anthony.

Too cheesy? Maybe too cheesy.

What’s up with sales for today? Well, Amazon’s got a few more featured deals for you, with Diablo III going down a few more dollars to $27.99, as well as Dark Souls on sale for $15.99. I’m really tempted to scoop that one up myself!

No t-shirts today – sorry, folks! My wallet isn’t, though. :) Go forth and spend that money on fun this weekend instead!

Nintendo Power’s last issue goes out in style

The final issue of Nintendo Power’s nearly quarter-century-long run is being delivered to subscribers now. It’s even possible to say that it’s the end of an era. Thankfully, Nintendo is sending their beloved official magazine off with a rather fitting tribute.

A Reddit user has posted a picture of the final cover and the claymation figures depicting a key moment in New Super Mario Bros. U that bears an uncanny resemblance to the cover of the first issue.

Yup, this is definitely the end of an era. Also, these tears running down my face are because of allergies. Yup, definitely allergies.

Nintendo confirms 3D Mario, Zelda games in development for Wii U

Shigeru Miyamoto confirmed that pre-planning for a Legend of Zelda game for the Wii U had begun within Nintendo at this year’s E3 Expo. But Nintendo’s President, Satoru Iwata, has revealed even more about the publisher’s future plans for two of their biggest franchises.

Speaking to IGN, Iwata announced that both a 3D Mario game and a Zelda game are in the works for the Wii U:

“We will announce the launch schedules for new 3D Zelda and Mario games in the future, but this is not the right opportunity for me to indicate when we will make such announcements,” Iwata said.

Nothing more was said, but I have a strong feeling that E3 2013 is going to be very interesting.

Angry Birds Star Wars “Hoth” update is now available

Earlier today, I was alerted to the fact that Rovio has released the “Hoth” update to Angry Birds Star Wars. And of course, I immediately updated the game and started playing. I’ve had things to do today (hey, naps are important, plus if I remember correctly from Daria, TV counts as a place to be), but I’ve peppered in as much playtime as I could and I’m almost done with all the levels.

The first update for ABSW is based on Episode V, The Empire Strikes Back and takes place on the ice planet of Hoth. Rovio says “[F]ans must lead the desperate Rebel birds to safety as they’re pursued by AT-ATs and Pigtroopers. Luckily the Rebels have an ace up their sleeve.” Yup, if you’ve been playing and noticed one of the characters missing from the lineup thus far, you’ll be happy to see that Princess Leia has made her debut (as the pink bird) and has an interesting (and mostly helpful) power.

Check out the trailer to see the Hoth adventure in action and if you’ve already purchased Angry Birds Star Wars, get the free update for iOS with 20 levels, and start it. Now! It’s pretty fun.

The Hoth update is coming soon to Android, Mac, and PC.
