The Games of May 2016

gamesofmay-header

There are some great games coming out this month, but it looks like there are only a few we agree on here at Warp Zoned! Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is the no-brainer, but we’re pretty hype for Shadow Complex Remastered as well. Hit the jump to see what else we’re excited to play in May!

I can count the number of games I’m excited for this month on one hand, but four of the five look to knock me out of my FPS slump, and the fifth is a brand new Ninja Turtles game from Platinum.

For some bizarre reason, Gearbox and Blizzard decided to go head-to-head this month with Battleborn and Overwatch, the first two entries in the new “Hero Shooter” subgenre. I think I’m leaning more towards Overwatch than Battleborn, but I still cannot believe they’er launching within three weeks of each other. That said, both look to have a rather titled take on the notoriously serious FPS genre, so it’s only a matter of time until I try out both.

And speaking of a game that refuses to take the FPS genre seriously, Bethesda and id Software are bringing back Doom with a wild new reboot. Helpfully nicknamed “NuDoom” by a good portion of the Internet, the game’s graphic might be modern, but it’s gameplay mechanics makes me feel like its 1993 all over again. My chainsaw arm is ready.

With its primitive graphics and novel mechanics, Superhot takes the opposite tack. Now available for the Xbox One, I love its minimalist look and strategic “Time Moves Only When You Move” gimmick.

Finally, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan is an arcade brawler produced by Platinum. Enough said.

There are so many great games coming out this month that I don’t know where to start. I didn’t pre-order it, but I hope to pick up Battleborn at some point, because it seems like some good fun. Shadow Complex Remastered for the PlayStation 4 is like a dream come true. That game was amazing years ago and I can’t wait to play an updated version. I’ve got Valkyria Chronicles Remastered on pre-order, and I’m really excited about that as well.

Of course, the game I’m most excited for is Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, which I can’t believe is almost already here. I can’t wait to take one last adventure with Drake!

I am a big fan of the Borderland series, but I am less enthused by Battleborn, and this is after just seeing the trailer at the cinema ahead of Captain America: Civil War. It’s being sold as a single or multiplayer in the advertising, but from what I have read, it’s pretty much a multiplayer game in the same way Destiny was, which was something I was not particularly taken by.

Shadow of the Beast is definitely being picked up because I have hazy memories of playing it when I was maybe eight or nine. It’ll be joined by Doom, if only because I finished Wolfenstein: The New Order and it has tickled my appetite for old school FPS games.

But the game I have had on pre-order for a while is Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. The original game and its sequel were the main reasons I bought a PS3 back in the day, and what made me buy into the PlayStation brand. Naughty Dog brings a level of storytelling to games that few developers even attempt, and it’s this that makes the series rise above the rest.

TURTLES! I’ve been looking forward to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan for a long time! Plus, it has so much going for it: four-player online co-op, made by Platinum games (makers of the AWESOME Transformers: Devastation), and the art style is based on the IDW comic, of which I am an avid reader. I really hope this one delivers, as we haven’t had a memorable TMNT game since Turtles in Time.

Other than that, Shadow Complex Remastered on the PS4 looks like a pickup. I loved the original, and you know I’m a fan of MetroidVania-style games, so this is on my radar as well.
