All PS4 games will be available as digital downloads; tiered PS Plus pricing a possibility

ps4-header

During the aftermath of Sony’s PlayStation 4 reveal on Wednesday, The Guardian got a chance to speak to Shuhei Yoshida, the President of Sony Worldwide Studios, about the company’s next-generation box. While Yoshida wouldn’t reveal when we’ll get a look at the final box, he did delve into a discussion of digital downloads as well as the possibility of a tiered subscription model.

On the subject of digital downloads, Yoshida confirmed that every PS4 game will be available to download from the PlayStation Store: “PS4 will be similar to PS Vita in that every game will be available as a digital download.” Though some games, such as The Witness, will only be available as downloads.

As for a tiered subscription model, Yoshida said:

As more and more services and contents become available digitally, we’ll have more of an option to create attractive packages. So hypothetically we can look at different models – like a cable TV company. We could have gold, silver or platinum levels of membership, something like that. We can do subscription services when we have more content – especially now that we have the Gaikai technology available. With one subscription you have access to thousands of games – that’s our dream.

How the current model of free online play/paid PlayStation Plus will fit into this new subscription setup remains to be seen.

Bugbear’s Next Car Game is probably a new FlatOut game

Bugbear Entertainment is best known for the FlatOut series of games, a trio of titles that featured destruction derby-type racing not unlike Psygnosis’s long lamented Destruction Derby series. The developer has opened a new website to promote their next game, which is currently known by the working title Next Car Game, and which they promise is a return to their roots:

We’re making a new car game. This time we’re going back to our roots – just like all of our fans have been asking us to do! If you like what you see above, you’re going to love it.

It’s all in-game footage!

So yeah, it’s probably a new FlatOut game, even if it doesn’t end carrying the FlatOut name. Next Car Game will be available for the PC and “yet to be announced consoles.”

Weekly Warp-Up: PS4 Reveal Edition

No, that’s not a typo. Welcome to the Weekly Warp-Up, your weekly wrap-up of the biggest and the best articles posted at Warp Zoned this week…

The entire world is still processing Sony’s massive “Meeting 2013” and the reveal of the PlayStation 4. Are you all caught up on the latest PS4 news? Here, let us help you.

The DualShock 4 controller includes everything the rumors said it would including a touchpad, a Share button, and redesigned thumbsticks. You want games? How Knack from Sony Japan Studio (trailer here), DriveClub from Evolution Studios (trailer here), InFamous: Second Son from Sucker Punch (trailer here), and The Witness from Jonathan Blow (trailer here).

Oh, and how could we forget Killzone: Shadow Fall? Set 30 years after the events of Killzone 3, Shadow Fall is looking pretty polished in its first trailer and even made an appearance on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, where it was confirmed as a PS4 launch title. Side note, Anthony Anderson is not a gamer. That’s OK, being a Law & Order alum forgives a lot.

Third parties got in on the act too including Capcom (with dragonhunting game Deep Down), Bungie (Destiny), Ubisoft (Watch Dogs), Blizzard (Diablo III), and Square Enix (with a Final Fantasy game that’ll be announced at E3). In fact, “every” major publisher/developer is signed on to develop for the PS4.

It won’t block used games and it’ll be available this holiday season. Ladies and gentlemen, the PS4.

For more next-generation shenanigans, be sure and take a look at our Essential Guide to Next-Generation Games: Version 1.0.

Do you have no interest in the PS4 but still want a healthy dose of game news from the last week? Please read the rest of the Weekly Warp-Up. (more…)

New Releases: Etrian Odyssey IV, Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 Plus, More

newreleases022613

Atlus’ DS RPG series makes the leap to the 3DS as Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan leads this week’s look at what’s new in stores. Also available this week, Ryu Hayabusa returns to a Sony portable platform (along with three beautiful assistants: Ayane, Rachel, and Momiji) in Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 Plus for the Vita.

If you’ve skipped the DLC content for Borderlands 2 so far, but don’t want to wait for the inevitable Game of the Year Edition, you might be interested in checking out the Borderlands 2: Add-On Content Pack for the PS3 and Xbox 360. It smushes the first two expansions and the Mechromancer character class onto a single disc (which requires Borderlands 2) for a decent price. Motorcycle racing game Mud: FIM Motocross World Championship is also available for the PS3 and Xbox 360 this week.

Finally, this week sees the release of the Kinect-powered Top Hand Rodeo Tour, which I imagine just asks you to do the “Gangnam Style” dance in your living room under the guise of taming a bucking bull.

Killzone: Shadow Fall confirmed as PS4 launch title on Jimmy Fallon

Late night’s most famous gamer, Jimmy Fallon, is the first person outside of Sony Computer Entertainment to publicly get his hands on the PlayStation 4. During last night’s Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, the talk show host was joined by actor Anthony Anderson and Herman Hulst, the Managing Director at Guerrilla Games.

Naturally, they played some Killzone: Shadow Fall.

Fallon and Anderson played the same section of the game we saw during Sony’s PS4 reveal, but we did learn two things. One, Anthony Anderson is an absolutely terrible video game player. And two, Killzone: Shadow Fall will be a PS4 launch game and it’ll be available this holiday season.

Super Mario Bros. 3’s World 8 in first person view is… well, super

Two years ago, YouTuber FreddieW recreated World 1-1 from Super Mario Bros. in a first person perspective. It was glorious and great and it feels like I’ve been waiting forever for an encore.

Today, FreddieW outdid himself. He jumped over the flagpole, set off all the fireworks, smashed a Koopa Troopa into the staircase for a squiggly green box worth of extra lives, and moonwalked into the castle. In other words, his latest video is cool.

FreddieW has taken the final stretch of World 8 from Super Mario Bros. 3 and recreated it in a first person view. This includes the rolling tanks, Bowser’s castle, and the final fight with the King Koopa himself.

Take a bow, you’ve earned it.

Diablo III for PS3 will be playable at PAX East 2013

diabloiii-header

After years of hints (which started before the PC version was even released), Blizzard has finally announced the existence of the console of Diablo III. And we’ll get our first chance to play it at this year’s PAX East expo (March 22-24).

Sadly, Blizzard is only bringing the PS3 version to Boston. So if you were hoping to get your hands on the new DualShock 4 controller, I’m sorry to disappoint. But the PS3 version is better than nothing, right?

“Diablo III looks and plays great on the PlayStation,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “We put a lot of care and thought into the PlayStation version to make sure it would deliver an authentic Diablo gaming experience, and we’re really pleased with the results. We can’t wait for players to try it out at PAX East.”

Diablo III on the PS3 will feature all of the enhancements found in the latest edition of the game including “the Paragon leveling system, customizable Monster Power, Brawling, and epic Legendary items.” PS3 players should be on the lookout for “an all-new user interface, including an intuitive control scheme and a new dynamic camera perspective.”

Oh yeah, and couch co-op for up to four people as well.
