Daily Scoop: March 18, 2013 – Surviving St. Patrick’s Day

Truly, the only surefire way to survive St. Patrick’s Day is not to leave the house, under any circumstances. Unfortunately, I had to leave the house yesterday, as my family was celebrating my birthday… in New Jersey. I’m glad to say that, despite being outside at several different times, at no point did I witness too much green clothing, gratuitous drunkenness, or any vomit. At all. I was impressed.

There are plenty of new deals up on Amazon’s game deals page. Diablo III, Dishonored, and NBA 2K13 are all $39.99. Doom 3 BFG Edition is $19.99 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and $9.99 on PC, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion – Game of the Year Edition is $12.49 on PC. And let’s not forget the Angry Birds Trilogy, which is $19.99 on the 3DS, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. Scoop ’em up!

No scoop would be complete without some video game-themed t-shirts! (more…)

Princeton Review names University of Utah the best undergrad game design program for 2013

universityofutah-logoThe Princeton Review has released the latest update to “Top Schools to Study Video Game Design,” their annual list of the best colleges for game design in the country. After dominating the undergrad list for three straight years, the University of Southern California has been dethroned by the University of Utah. However, USC still holds the top spot on the list of graduate programs.

The Princeton Review studied and ranked 50 different game design programs for this year’s report focusing on “the school curriculum, faculty, facilities, and infrastructure, plus career services, student scholarships, and financial aid.” The rankings can be found after the break and the complete report, which includes profiles of the schools, can be found at PrincetonReview.com. 10 Actresses That Could Help Reboot the Tomb Raider Film Franchise

tombraiderfilm-header

In March 2011, we reported that GK Films had acquired the film rights to the Tomb Raider franchise, and that a reboot of the film series was on its way. Now that the reboot of the game has launched, the good people at Crystal Dynamics, who have been developing the Tomb Raider games since 2006, are working closely with uber-producer Graham King’s outfit GK Films on a third cinematic outing for Lara Croft. The film will follow the game’s lead and reboot the series, possibly even using the plot of the new game. This is unlike the two previous films, which used plots that were entirely independent from any game in the franchise. It is perhaps for this reason that they are best described as “watchable.”

The Tomb Raider film reboot joins a slew of celluloid adaptations currently in development, including Assassin’s Creed, Deus Ex, Need For Speed, Hitman (again), Shadow of the Colossus, as well as Splinter Cell and Ghost Recon. But the big question on everyone’s lips is, “Who will play the new Lara Croft?” With the arrival of the game last week, we thought it might be a good time to have a look at ten potential actresses who could take the Tomb Raider baton from Angelina Jolie.

Daily Scoop: March 11, 2013 – Monday’s here again, too soon

Happy Monday, everyone! The weekend flew by too quickly, as always. I’m happy to say I had a great birthday, though! Friday night, we went to a friend’s going away party, and he got me a surprise birthday cake! Saturday I had to do homework, which made me sad, but then went to play board games with some friends, which made me happy! And then Sunday was a book club meeting, and after that Dead Space 3 all night, interrupted only by The Walking Dead. Good friends, good fun, good cake!

Let’s see… what kind of deals are there? Well, Best Buy has some sales going on right now, including Starcraft II for $19.99. GameStop is having some sales as well, like Aliens: Colonial Marines, Crysis 3, Forza Horizons, and Far Cry 3 for $39.99 each.

There are quite a few t-shirts available to pick from today! (more…)

Boomshakalaka! Kim Jong-un and Dennis Rodman are on fire in this NBA Jam parody

Someday, historians may write about Dennis Rodman’s visit to North Korea as the beginning of a basketball diplomacy program that opened up the secretive nation to the rest of the world. For now though, he’s just the tattooed and pierced weirdo who shared courtside seats with a dictator at an exhibition game.

Naturally, this lead someone to mashup Kim Jong-un’s famed athletic abilities with the extreme stylings of NBA Jam. The “North Korean All-Stars” are lead by Kim Jong-un’s flawless skillset (10 out of 10 in Speed, Power, Shoot, Dunks, Steal, and Block) against a “Pathetic Americans” team that includes Mark Jackson and Sarunas Marciulionis of the 1996-97 Denver Nuggets.

Can you guess the final score? Let’s just say it makes Kim Jong-il’s purported 11 hole-in-ones on the golf course seem realistic.

Wreck-It Ralph spoofs King of Kong with “Garlan Hulse: Where Potential Lives”

As well as being one of the best animated films of all time, Wreck-It Ralph had a very well planned marketing strategy that built an entire history behind the titular retro arcade game, including this old-school advert. Now, to promote the release of the film on Blu-ray and DVD, Disney has gone one better, creating a fictional version of smash documentary King of Kong for Wreck-It Ralph‘s world.

Entitled Garlan Hulse: Where Potential Lives, the 28-minute mockumentary features the film’s director, Rich Moore, as he leaps back to 1982 to enlighten us about Garlan Hulse’s recordbreaking Fix-It Felix Jr. score. He held the fame-winning title for only six weeks, before it was lost to former best friend, Kent Zborski. Cut to present day, and Moore journeys through California in search of the former gaming wunderkind. It is as equally as funny as the film it is promoting, and deserves half an hour of your day.

Daily Scoop: March 8, 2013 – Birthday edition!

It’s true, Internet – today is my birthday! And it falls on a Friday, which is pretty much the best day to have a birthday ever. And it’s Ralph “The Father of Video Games” Baer’s birthday too!

I’m spending the evening with some friends at a going away party for a pal who is headed out on a road trip to GDC. Then tomorrow I hope to see Nullsleep, but there’s a big board game night event as well, so I have to decide! Too many wonderful choices. Not a complaint!

So what’s happening on my birthday? Not a darn thing. No video game deals. And I’ve decided I’m not going to buy any of those games in my cart until I beat at least one more. I spent last night with Dead Space 3, trying to give it another chance, but I snuck in some Fire Emblem: Awakening when Isaac wasn’t looking. I know, I know, I live on the edge!

My birthday also brings good t-shirts! Though I’ll admit it, I don’t want to buy any. Good or bad? You decide! (more…)
