Guerrilla Games exits Killzone to work on original project

guerrillagames-logoGuerrilla Games has confirmed that Killzone: Shadow Fall will be their last contribution to the franchise for the foreseeable future. Speaking to Eurogamer, Lead Designer Eric Boltjes revealed that the developer is ready to move on to something new and original.

“As a studio we do want to branch out, and we have started work on a new IP, something completely different to Killzone. I don’t want to say anything about it right now, but as a studio we do want to keep it fresh,” Boltjes said.

Killzone: Shadow Fall will be available on November 15 as part of the PlayStation 4’s launch lineup, but obviously, Boltjes kept any details about Guerrilla’s next project to himself during his discussion with Eurogamer.

Batman: Arkham Origins will include hardcore “I Am the Night” Mode

batmanarkhamorigins-header

Warner Bros. Montreal is definitely taking the “Origins” part of Batman: Arkham Origins seriously. Speaking to Eurogamer at this weekend’s Eurogamer Expo, Producer Guillaume Voghel confirmed that the “Initiation” DLC pack will send Bruce Wayne to Asia as part of his ninja training with the martial arts master Kirigi. The DLC will be the first time any part of the Arkham games take place outside Gotham City.

“It’s when he learned to be a ninja and learned those techniques. He goes to a monastery – custom content was created for the DLC. You’ll be in Asia in the monastery. The team did a great job on that, it looks really good,” said Voghel.

Voghel also talked a bit about the game’s “I Am the Night” Mode, an extremely hardcore test of Batman’s heroic abilities that opens up after players complete the main game and the New Game Plus campaign. In “I Am the Night,” players will have to complete the game’s entire 12-hour campaign using a single life.

You can find out if you’re up to the challenge when Batman: Arkham Origins is released for the PC, PS3, Wii U, and Xbox 360 on October 25.

Precursor puts Shadow of the Eternals on hold

shadowoftheeternals-header

It looks like the dream of a spiritual successor to Eternal Darkness is dead. Or, at the very least, in a very deep sleep.

Precursor’s Denis Dyack has announced, via the company’s Official Forums, that Shadow of the Eternals has been put “on hold.” Most of the team will be taking a break, though the forums will remain in place for those who want to talk about a game that will likely never come out. Though that might not be fair as Dyack also said: “Is the project dead? No, but we feel it needs a rest too. We have all agreed as a group that when and if the time is right we will get together and start it up again.”

But after two failed Kickstarter campaigns, I’m not sure it’ll be that easy.

Weekly Warp-Up: Steamy Living Room Edition

No, that’s not a typo. Welcome to the Weekly Warp-Up, your weekly wrap-up of the biggest and the best articles posted at Warp Zoned this week…

Hey everybody! Look! Valve is doing some stuff! On the eve of the launch of the eighth generation of consoles, Valve has revealed their “Living Room Initiative,” which consists of the Linux-based SteamOS, the living room-friendly Steam Machines, and the wild Steam Controller. Can they make a dent in space previously dominated by Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft? I don’t know, but it is going to be fun to watch.

But before you go forward, it’s helpful to look back. And that’s just what we’re going to do over the next few months with “Warp Zoned Rewind.” The first Rewind takes a look at this generation’s best HD Remakes and there’s plenty more where that came from.

So after you look back, you can look forward again and that’s where our interviews with Rocketcat’s Kepa Auwae about Death Road to Canada and Matt Gilgenbach about his pencil-drawn Neverending Nightmares come in. Also, we got a little hands-on time with Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. That’s a game that’s coming out in the future. Not on a Steam “living room PC” though.

Take a seat in your favorite armchair and check out the rest of the news from this week after the break.

New Releases: Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD, NBA 2K14, Etrian Odyssey Untold, More

newreleases100113

The Wii U keeps on sailing towards better day with the release of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD this week. In contrast with Wind Waker’s polarizing 2003 debut, everyone seems very excited to get their hands on the remake. Also available this week is 2K’s latest sports title, NBA 2K14. The game will be released for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.

A pair of RPGs will make their way to the 3DS this week including Atlus’ Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl and Marvelous/XSEED’s Rune Factory 4.

Finally, a pair of Ubisoft compilations may entice the budget Xbox 360 gamer. Assassin’s Creed: Ezio Trilogy (which includes Assassin’s Creed II, Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, and Assassin’s Creed: Revelations) and Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Trilogy (which includes Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter 2, and Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier) will both be available for Microsoft’s system.

Valve announces unorthodox Steam Controller

steamcontrollerValve’s final announcement of the week (following on the heels of SteamOS and the Steam Machines living room PC) is a brand new controller they’ve dubbed the “Steam Controller.”

The Steam Controller will work with any version of Steam (including Windows and Mac) and won’t be limited to Steam Machines-branded PCs or other SteamOS devices. The controller will launch in 2014, and just like their Steam Machines prototype, Valve plans to offer 300 fans the chance to beta test the new controller. But why does it look so weird?

Instead of two analog sticks, the Steam Controller features two massive trackpads that feel more like a desktop mouse than an analog stick. Each trackpad is also clickable. The four face buttons have been shifted to the center of the controller where they encircle a large touchpad, which is also clickable. Four shoulder buttons also sit atop the controller in their standard spot. And finally, two buttons are nestled in the back of the controller next to the grips.

It’s likely that console gamers will be confused by the Steam Controller, but Valve believes it’ll bring PC games to the living room for the first time: “Whole genres of games that were previously only playable with a keyboard and mouse are now accessible from the sofa. RTS games. Casual, cursor-driven games. Strategy games. 4X space exploration games. A huge variety of indie games. Simulation titles. And of course, Euro Truck Simulator 2.”

Who knows if Valve can take over the living room, but they’ve definitely presented some interesting ideas this week.
