We are T-Minus 12 days from the launch of the Nintendo Switch, so now is a good time as any to ask Is Nintendo Marketing the Switch to the Wrong Audience? For a company so closely liked with the childlike wonder that video games can create, we’ve noticed there’s been a distinct lack of kids in the Switch’s marketing materials.

But, of course, video games aren’t just for kids. And no where is there more evident than in latest Kickstart This! selection, a game adaptation of Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now.

Finally this week, our Scientifically Proven Best Video Games of All Time series looked at the simplicity of Space Invaders. Drop down, increase speed, and reverse direction!

It was going to happen eventually, but this week, the Entertainment Software Association finally announced that the E3 Expo will be open to the public this year. Tickets go on sale tomorrow, February 13, in very limited quantities.

We don’t know what games will be available to try out at this year’s E3 Expo, but we did get the chance to play Freedom Planet 2, GalaxyTrail’s retro homage to Sonic the Hedgehog, earlier this week. This early demo is shaping up well, and it’ll be out sometime this Summer.

Elsewhere on Warp Zoned this week, we reviewed a pair of recent games… the puzzle platforming of Metrico+ and the survival horror of Amnesia Collection.

Also this week, we turned our Scientifically Proven Best Video Games of All Time spotlight on one of the world’s foremost experts on turducken, John Madden Football.

Ever since WB Games released Batman: Arkham Asylum in 2009, everyone has been wondering when Marvel would hire a quality developer to adapt their beloved characters (even though the excellent X-Men Origins: Wolverine was released a few months earlier). But the “True Believers” won’t have to wait much longer, as Square Enix and Marvel have teamed up for a multi-game Avengers Project that’ll be developed by Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal.

And speaking of past Marvel successes, we reviewed the PS4 re-release of Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3 earlier this week.

While the Avengers Project is at least a year away, we can still celebrate the best games from last year with the 2017 SXSW Gaming Awards. Dishonored 2, Doom, Overwatch, Titanfall 2, and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End will compete for the “Video Game of the Year” award at the annual ceremony.

Finally this week, our latest essay looking at the history behind “The Scientifically Proven Best Video Games of All Time” focused on Resident Evil and how its popularity helped resurrect the zombie genre.

We’ve updated our Big List of Nintendo Switch Games in the aftermath of that huge Nintendo Switch Presentation. There’s definitely something for everyone with more than 80 games in development for Nintendo’s next console.

However, the consolemaker had more to say this week with a packed Fire Emblem Direct presentation that included new details on the February 2nd launch of Fire Emblem Heroes on Android devices, a New 3DS debut for Fire Emblem Warriors, and the announcement of a “main series” Fire Emblem game that’ll come to the Switch in 2018. Nintendo also confirmed that 1992’s Fire Emblem Gaiden will finally be released in the US as Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia in May.

The Nintendo Switch Presentation finally happened and it was, at times, both a glorious trainwreck and completely glorious. It was quintessential Nintendo and it looks like the company has decided to further embrace their desire to get weird with their next console. Thankfully, all the best stuff was right up front, with confirmation that the Nintendo Switch will launch on March 3 for $299 and with no region lock on any of its games.

Elsewhere on Warp Zoned this week, the staff got together to talk about What We Played in December 2016 and our picks for The Games of January 2017.

Welcome to 2017!

We at Warp Zoned rang in the new year by launching our biggest project ever: “The Scientifically Proven Best Video Games of All Time.” We analyzed 44 different “Best Video Games of All Time” lists and used the data to produce a definitive Top 100. We’re also going to look deeper at at least one game in the Top 100 every week, and we hope you’ll join us for that.

Also this week, we handed out the 2016 Golden Pixel Awards to some of our favorite games from last year including Doom, Final Fantasy XV, Dark Souls III, Pokemon Sun and Moon, and many more.

Goodbye 2016, I think it’s safe to say that most people won’t miss you AT ALL.
