Weekly Warp-Up: Merry Christmas 2016

No, that’s not a typo. Welcome to the Weekly Warp-Up, your weekly wrap-up of the biggest and the best articles posted at Warp Zoned this week…

“You there, boy! What day is this?”
“Today, sir? Why, it’s Christmas Day!”

Whether you’re spending time with family or having a chat with three spirits, wishing for a Red Ryder BB Gun, or throwing Hans Gruber off a skyscraper, it’s time to be of good cheer. Even if the great video game news wheel has ground to a halt in the last few days of 2016.

Though let’s not forget, Square Enix gave us a brand new look at Dragon Quest XI: In Search of the Departed Time, 343 started to internally discuss “super-secret” stuff related to Halo 6, and Niantic kicked off a “Year-End Event” for Pokemon Go.

Elsewhere on Warp Zoned this week, UK Correspondent Andrew Rainnie filed his final Kickstart This! of the year for Super Red-Hot Hero, and Editor-In-Chief John Scalzo reviewed Super Mario Run.

Weekly Warp-Up: Is It 2017 Yet? Edition

No, that’s not a typo. Welcome to the Weekly Warp-Up, your weekly wrap-up of the biggest and the best articles posted at Warp Zoned this week…

Publishers and developers have officially run out of interesting things to talk about in 2016. So with two weeks left in the year, people have started to look to 2017, which promises to be a huge year for the industry.

This is especially true for Nintendo, which released Super Mario Run for iOS devices earlier this week, and is planning to launch the Switch in March. So as we get ready for the consolemaker’s big presentation planned for January 12, we updated our Big List of Nintendo Switch Games to reflect the latest announcements.

Also this week, we’re looking forward to Resident Evil 7: Biohazard in January, so we played through the “Midnight Version” of the game’s Beginning Hour demo.

Weekly Warp-Up: Nintendo Will Fully Unveil the Switch in One Month…

No, that’s not a typo. Welcome to the Weekly Warp-Up, your weekly wrap-up of the biggest and the best articles posted at Warp Zoned this week…

We’re just 32 days away from Nintendo’s big Switch presentation, and with the rest of the industry shutting down for the holidays, it’s a great time to talk about everything that’s been happening with the upcoming console.

The biggest news from this past week is that the consolemaker brought the Nintendo Switch (and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Run) to The Tonight Show. Jimmy Fallon got to grope the coveted console for a few minutes, and it was our first “live” look at the machine operating in the wild.

But perhaps more interesting is all the rumors surrounding the Switch, including a fairly credible report that states From Software will release a Dark Souls Trilogy collection next year. Fans of classic gaming might also be interested in the rumored inclusion of GameCube games in the Switch’s Virtual Console.

Indie developers are wholeheartedly embracing the Switch and two new games were announced this week: a dreamy exploration game known as Seasons of Heaven, and an adventurous RPG known as The Sacred Hero.

Elsewhere on Warp Zoned this week, the staff got together to discuss What We Played in November and The Games of December.

Weekly Warp-Up: Time to Look Back at the 2016 Game Awards and 2016 PlayStation Experience

No, that’s not a typo. Welcome to the Weekly Warp-Up, your weekly wrap-up of the biggest and the best articles posted at Warp Zoned this week…

One of the best weeks on the gaming calendar is the one-two punch of The Game Awards and Sony’s PlayStation Experience. This year was no different.

Overwatch won the coveted “Game of the Year” prize at the Game Awards, and new trailer were unveiled for Death Stranding, Telltale’s Guardians of the Galaxy, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment, and Mass Effect: Andromeda.

This year’s PlayStation Experience gave us an even bigger look into gaming’s future with announcements for The Last of Us Part II, Marvel Vs Capcom: Infinite (which is also coming to the PC and Xbox One), and dozens more.

Elsewhere on Warp Zoned this week, we published Warp Zoned Wish List to offer suggestions on What We Want From the Resident Evil 2 Remake. And Andrew Rainnie is back with a new Kickstart This! column, this time focusing on Nuclear Fiction’s Ariel.

Weekly Warp-Up: It’s Still Black Friday Somewhere…

No, that’s not a typo. Welcome to the Weekly Warp-Up, your weekly wrap-up of the biggest and the best articles posted at Warp Zoned this week…

There were some pretty great Black Friday deals this year, and many retailers have chosen to offer the same discounts all weekend long, so now’s your chance to get a big batch of good games for cheap.

Also this week, developers from Capcom revealed that the publisher has updates for Street Fighter V “planned out as far as 2020.” And speaking of the fighting game, we also took A Look Back at Street Fighter V’s Season Pass.

Weekly Warp-Up: This Is the End for the Wii U…

No, that’s not a typo. Welcome to the Weekly Warp-Up, your weekly wrap-up of the biggest and the best articles posted at Warp Zoned this week…

My friends, this is the end. Nintendo announced that they’re officially ending production of the Wii U in the very near future. Was Nintendo’s strange tablet controller a slow-burning secret success or a disaster from the very start? That question will probably be argued over and pondered until the real end of time, but for know, I think we can all agree that the Wii U was an extremely interesting experiment and it hosted some incredible games.

We’re also nearing the end of the year, and that means a few annual traditions are circling back around:

  • Black Friday is less than a week away and here’s a look at the game deals you’ll find at Toys R Us.
  • The 2016 Game Awards will be handed out in early December, and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End leads the way with eight nominations.
  • Sony PlayStation Experience event will also be held in early December and they’ve announced which publishers and developers will be attending this year.

Weekly Warp-Up: Let’s Speculate About the Nintendo Switch…

No, that’s not a typo. Welcome to the Weekly Warp-Up, your weekly wrap-up of the biggest and the best articles posted at Warp Zoned this week…

While lots of great games have worked their way into stores over the last few weeks, there’s been a distinct lack of game news to keep us occupied. Because of that, our thoughts turned to the future and the Warp Zoned staff decided… Let’s Speculate About the Nintendo Switch. Nintendo’s next console is still a complete mystery, but we’ve got a few ideas about how it could change the way people think about console gaming.

Of course, there was plenty of real talk about the Switch this week as developers and publishers can’t seem to stop themselves from saying good things about the platform. Cypronia announced that Cube Life: Island Survival HD is in development for Nintendo’s console (and the PS4). Ubisoft‘s CEO promised to deliver “at least one game [for the Switch] that will definitely surprise you.”

And Tantalus, the developer of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD, announced they’re working on a game for the Switch too. Is it another remaster of a major Nintendo-published title? We don’t know, but we can speculate.

Weekly Warp-Up: Halloween, Horror, and the Games of November…

No, that’s not a typo. Welcome to the Weekly Warp-Up, your weekly wrap-up of the biggest and the best articles posted at Warp Zoned this week…

Hope you had a great Halloween on Monday, we celebrated the holiday with Part Five of It’s In Your Blood: A History of Horror Games.

Elsewhere on Warp Zoned this week, the staff got together to discuss What We Played in October 2016 and The Games of November 2016.

And in Nintendo Switch news this week, Nintendo said the new console won’t be a replacement for the 3DS. And Capcom said they want their Switch games to be unique and not ports of existing PS4 or Xbox One titles.
